“I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE QUIET…”: Sir David Attenborough left overwhelmed as the nation showers him with love on his 100th birthday
As milestone birthdays go, few come close to the emotional outpouring surrounding David Attenborough turning 100 — a moment that has seen the beloved naturalist quietly hoping for a low-key celebration… only for the entire nation to have other plans.
In the days leading up to his centenary, Sir David’s home in Richmond was inundated with hundreds of letters, parcels, and heartfelt gifts from across the UK — and even from abroad. Postmen reportedly arrived with armfuls of mail, leaving the veteran broadcaster visibly surprised and deeply touched by the scale of affection.

In a message shared online, Sir David admitted he had hoped the occasion might “slip by unnoticed,” but instead found himself overwhelmed by the response. He explained that birthday wishes had poured in from people of all ages — from preschool children to care home residents — describing the experience as incredibly moving. While he acknowledged he couldn’t reply individually, he made sure to thank everyone sincerely and wished those planning celebrations a joyful day.
The touching video showed him gently holding a harvest mouse — a nod to his recent work — as he reflected on the unexpected tribute, blending his lifelong love of wildlife with a moment of personal gratitude.

Despite the emotional build-up, Sir David is marking the day itself in his signature understated style — spending time with close family before attending a major tribute event at the Royal Albert Hall.
The special celebration, titled David Attenborough’s 100 Years on Planet Earth, will be broadcast on BBC One and promises to honour his extraordinary legacy. Featuring the BBC Concert Orchestra, the event will combine iconic music from his landmark documentaries with reflections from collaborators and leading voices in conservation — with Prince William expected among the guests.

Commissioned by BBC executive Jack Bootle, the tribute aims to capture not just a career, but a global impact. He noted that it is impossible to overstate what Attenborough has given the world, adding that his work has fundamentally changed how humanity sees the planet and its place within it.
