Fans of Michael Ball were left emotional after the beloved performer opened up about the devastating loss of his mother, Ruth, during an appearance on This Morning on Friday.
The 63-year-old singer appeared on the ITV show to promote his new album Glow, but the conversation quickly turned deeply personal as he shared the moving story of his motherâs final days â and the âperfect goodbyeâ they shared together.
Ruth sadly passed away last August at the age of 91 after becoming suddenly ill. Speaking through tears, Michael revealed that his mother made the courageous decision to refuse further medical intervention and instead chose end-of-life care.
âIt was the most beautiful, if one can plan a death,â Michael said emotionally. âShe was taken ill on a Saturday. I went to the hospital, and for five days she had one very serious heart episode. The doctors said, âIf we intervene again, it will be really horrible.ââ
But Ruth, described by Michael as fearless, funny, and fiercely independent, knew exactly what she wanted.
âShe said, âNo, Iâd like end-of-life care now, please,ââ he recalled. âShe was fully conscious, utterly determined, and funny as hell. We cried, we talked, and I was holding her hand as she went.â
The heartbreaking confession left hosts Dermot OâLeary and Alison Hammond visibly moved, while viewers flooded social media with messages of support for the star.
Despite the pain, Michael insisted there was peace in her passing.
âIt wasnât a tragedy. Itâs deeply sad, of course, but it was a beautiful, perfect goodbye,â he explained.
And in a touching twist, Michael also shared one unforgettable memory that perfectly captured Ruthâs adventurous spirit.
When she turned 90, he expected she might want a glamorous lunch at the Ritz. Instead, Ruth shocked everyone with a wildly different birthday wish â riding the fastest zip wire in North Wales and getting a tattoo.
âShe got a huge Welsh dragon tattoo on her arm,â Michael laughed. âThen she threw herself down the zip wire!â
The emotional interview painted a portrait of a remarkable woman who lived life entirely on her own terms until the very end.
As Michael fought back tears, he smiled while remembering the mother who clearly shaped his warmth, humor, and love of life.
âIt was perfect,â he said quietly. âA perfect ending.â
