Even though itâs bittersweet for Stephen Colbert as he nears the end of The Late Show, Jon Stewart quite literally lifted the hostâs spirits on Tuesday.
During Stewartâs visit to the CBS late night talk show for his final guest appearance, he brought Colbert a gift, previewing the hostâs new life once The Late Show ends on May 21.

Stephen Colbert Sets Final âLate Showâ Guests: Jon Stewart, Steven Spielberg, David Byrne, Bruce Springsteen
âEverybody has been coming up with a bit to sort of end their thing. They sang you a song. They wrote you a poem. They did all that. I am not talented, so Iâm not doing any of that,â The Daily Show host quipped.

âYou deserve something tangible, something that you have earned. You deserve a gift that befits the sacrifice and work that you have put into this show, and that can show you the life you can lead and the life that I am leading now that Iâm not really in show business,â Stewart said, as crewmembers rolled out two recliners. âMy man. Youâre gonna enjoy watching Matlock in this motherfucker.â
However, the surprise didnât stop there.
âThe thing about these chairs is as you get comfortable in them, you start to think to yourself, âAm I going to have to expend energy to get out of it?ââ Stewart said as they both lay back in the chairs. No need to fear, though, because he had a solution.
âStephen, get ready for the ride of your fucking life,â The Daily Show host quipped, as the duo pressed a button on the chairs that started lifting them up. âPress the up button. Press the up button. Press it. Press it.â
But the moment was still missing something, as Stewart admitted that âhis tribute isnât completeâ without a special performance.

Jon Stewart stopped by The Late Show to pay tribute to his friend and former colleague Stephen Colbert, offering up a few gifts to honor the late-night showâs unfortunate ending.
During the lengthy interview, Colbert and Stewart reminisced about their days together on The Daily Show, where Colbert was a correspondent for eight years. Colbert shared a photo of the pair together behind The Daily Show desk 27 years ago. âThis is no disrespect to me, but one of us has not aged as well as the other,â Stewart quipped. âThis looks like a double-blind study where they gave one of these people is getting age-defying peptides and the other one is getting a placebo. I have gotten the placebo.â
Stewart also offered his thoughts on CBS deciding to cancel The Late Show, which comes to an end on Thursday night. âI just think itâs so smart what CBS is doing,â he said sarcastically. âI just think itâs such a good move to take this show off the air and then also ruin your evening news and then reduce 60 Minutes to, like, six good ones.â
âStephen, this tribute doesnât represent the joy that you brought to me as my friend and the joy that youâve brought to this country as one of its leading entertainers,â he said. âNo, what this moment needs is something so much more.â
Thatâs when Andra Day walked out on the stage, leaving Colbert pleasantly surprised. She sang her hit song âRise Up,â which was perfect for the moment as the pair ascended together in their recliners, holding hands.
Colbert and Stewart have been close friends for nearly 30 years since Colbert joined The Daily Show in 1997. Then, when Colbert became the host of The Late Show in 2015, Stewart made frequent guest appearances, even performing in surprise sketches over the years.
Steven Spielberg also made an appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Tuesday. The showâs final episode airs Thursday.
