Late Saturday night, Saturday Night Live didnât just make a jokeâit went straight for the jugular. Only hours after breaking news about the Iran strike lit up the world, the showâs writers tore up their script and rushed out a last-second rewrite that turned the cold open into pure live-TV chaos
Very early on Saturday morning, February 28, the United States and Israel launched what President Donald Trump called âmajor combat operationsâ in Iran, issuing military strikes. The move surprised many Americans â including the writers at Saturday Night Live, as Trump (James Austin Johnson) explained during the cold open to Connor Storrieâs episode.
âThose guys were going crazy,â he continued. âThey probably had a big State of the Union address thing they were gonna do. Not anymore! Jeremy [Culhane] was in it. Poor Jeremy. Heâs got a light show. Put the whole thing in the trash and start fresh! We love that for them.â Itâs almost like the SNL writers were trying to tell us something.
Donald Trump and Pete Hegseth (kind of) explain the U.S. attack on Iran
âAs we all know, Iran has been two weeks away from developing a nuclear weapon for like, the last 15 years or something, so we had to act now. And weâre doing war,â SNLâs Trump explained in his address. âWar! What is it good for? / Distracting from the Epstein files,â he added, breaking into song.
âTo all my MAGA voters who are upset and saying, âThis is not what I voted for,â well, you did. Donât you know who I am? Iâm me,â he continued. âEven I donât know what Iâm gonna do next.â
But when it came to defending the choice to enter into war with Iran alongside Israel, Trump let Hegseth do the heavy lifting.
âThey asked for someone to volunteer to oversee this half-baked operation, and I didnât walk. Iran,â Jostâs Hegseth said.
âBut donât let my confident demeanor fool you. I am scared, and I donât know what Iâm doing,â Hegseth admitted. âWhen he said we were gonna blow up the leader of Iran, I thought he was kidding. And now, all day long, Iâve been hearing people say, âWhy did we do this? Whatâs the reason for this war?ââ
Ultimately, Jostâs Hegseth thinks âall of you should be thanking us. We took out a horrendous, horrible leader who was oppressing his own people.â
âBut donât get any ideas!â Trump interjected.
