Blue Bloods ran for 14 seasons on CBS. Its spinoff, Boston Blue, just wrapped its first â and a second is on the way. Danny Reaganâs adventures in Beantown are just beginning.
That said, Boston Blueâs first season was jam-packed with white-knuckle action, political intrigue, and, of course, loads of family drama. As Donnie Wahlbergâs hot-headed detective carved out a place in the Boston Police Department â where his son, Sean (Mika Amonsen), also took a job as a patrol officer â his partnership with Det. Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green) connected him to her family, a noted law enforcement dynasty not unlike his own back in New York City.
Lenaâs family includes her mother Mae (Gloria Reuben), the Boston District Attorney; grandpa Edwin (Ernie Hudson), a prominent minister; stepsister Sarah (Maggie Lawson), the BPD Superintendent of Detectives; and half-brother Jonah (Marcus Scribner), an officer partnered with Sean.
Below, weâre breaking down the finaleâs biggest revelations, that intense cliffhanger, and what it all means for season 2 with the help of Boston Blue showrunners Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier.
Who shot Lena?

There are several shocking moments in âPatrol,â not the least of them being Lena taking a bullet while investigating a shady company smuggling contraband into the local prison.
The lead about the contraband came via Eric Harper (Joe Delfin), the criminal who shivved Lenaâs old friend Yancey (Kieron River) a few episodes back. After a bit of digging, theyâre tipped off to a commissary vendor called Dax thatâs been delivering sundries to the prison in unmarked cars. While plotting their next move, they try what they think will be a harmless door-knock at the Dax warehouse. And thatâs when a shot blasts through the door and knocks Lena to the ground.
The shooter turns out to be a former inmate at the prison named Wally Craig. Sean jumps on the back of Wallyâs van as he drives off and is thrown off â but not before one of his AirPods lands on the rear bumper. This allows the BPD to track the van and, eventually, Wallyâs whereabouts.
Wally is found and arrested, but Lena is hurt, having suffered a punctured lung and nerve damage.
Does Lena finally meet her birth father?
Earlier in the season, Lena confronted her mother about the identity of her birth father, Chris Williams (Erik King).
Mae previously told her Chris had a criminal past and that he never knew about Lena, but she held back the whole truth. While itâs true that Chris was incarcerated, he turned his life around after a stint in the military. And when Lena tracks him down herself, sheâs shocked to discover heâs the chief at a police station just outside of Boston. Furthermore, he has a daughter of his own, Kristina (Alisha Wainwright), meaning that Lena has a half-sister she didnât know about.
As if that werenât enough, it turns out Chris did want to know about Lena and wanted to be part of her life, but Mae wouldnât allow it. After spending the last few episodes arguing with Mae about her desire to meet Chris, Lena gears up to confront him in the finale.
The opportunity comes when Lena is in the hospital. As she recovers, she finally meets her biological father for the first time. âDid you think about me?â she asks. âDid you wonder who I was?â
He apologizes for not having been there for her. âI was wrong to leave, whatever the circumstance,â he says. He wants to make it right. Lena says itâs a start.
You can expect to see more of Chris (and Kristina) in season 2. âThis isnât the end. That storyâs not over,â Sonnier confirms. âWhat does it look like to get to know someone that you were supposed to know your whole life? What does it look like to introduce a new biological sister when you are so very close to your stepsister? How do those new triangles and relationship dynamics work?â
Margolis, meanwhile, teases darker elements to this story. âBe careful what you wish for because there could be other consequences you didnât anticipate,â he says. âBut it all comes back to leaning on your family to get you through these tough times.â
Why didnât Mae want Lena to meet her father?
Chris also has a sit-down with Mae in the finale. When Mae says their separation was the right decision, Chris says heâs long wondered if it was âright for our daughter.â
âLena is not ours,â Mae replies. âBiology does not make you a father. Love, guidance, presence â thatâs whatâs required.â
She acknowledges that she told Chris she didnât want him in Lenaâs life, but chokes up when she recalls âthe look of reliefâ in his eyes. âThatâs what stayed with me,â she says.
âMae, Iâm here now,â he says.
Should Mae be nervous about election season?

Yes, and she knows it, too, portending that election season is âgonna get ugly.â
Why? Because a young, cocky Assistant District Attorney, Thad Longfellow (Ward Horton) wants to oust her as the District Attorney â and is willing to throw mud in order to do it.
And there is mud to throw. For one, Mae is carrying on a secret affair with Judge Elijah Robinson (Harry J. Lennix). Though theyâve worked to ensure their personal and professional relationships donât cross, they know sheâll be in hot water if theyâre exposed before they can get ahead of it.
Thad may even see potential in exploiting Maeâs relationship with Chris. Near the end of the finale, Elijah receives a text with a photo of Mae and Chris at a restaurant. Sheâs already being spied on.
When asked if campaigning will bring out a different (perhaps darker) side of Mae, Margolis says the âtemptationâ to throw mud is âgoing to be very real and very hard to resist.â He adds, âShe doesnât like getting pulled into the mud, but she has people around her who might be willing to [play dirty.]â
Sonnier notes that an unscrupulous power player like Thad becoming District Attorney could result in a seismic shift in terms of how the Boston PD does its job. The Silvers, too, might end up in his crosshairs if Mae isnât reelected. âSheâs quite literally not just protecting the throne, but sheâs protecting her kids,â he says.
Is Danny planning a career pivot?

He sure is. In the finale, Sean asks his dad why he never considered following in his fatherâs footsteps and becoming a police commissioner. Danny says heâs a âboots on the groundâ type, but his tune changes by episodeâs end.
First, thereâs what happened to Lena. Heâs nearly moved to tears while sitting by her side in the hospital. âYou put a real scare into me, partner,â he says. And then he gets a visit from Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez), his ex-partner and girlfriend. Their relationship has been strained since he moved to Boston, but her desire to commit to him has him wanting more stability.
He plans on taking the sergeantâs exam. âIf Iâm in a command position, I can be for Sean what my dad was for me,â he says.
Sonnier laughs when discussing Dannyâs newfound interest in climbing the ranks. âWhat detective is more overdue for a promotion than Danny Reagan?â he asks.
He adds that this is exactly the kind of story they want to explore on Boston Blue. âWhat does it look like for Danny Reagan to be in charge of people? What does it look like for Danny Reagan to have to answer in a different way to the hierarchy?â
Danny also tells Maria that a promotion could help him get a bigger home so Maria, as well as her mother and daughter, can come live with him in Boston.
âShouldnât we take things slow?â she asks.
âI think Iâm done taking it slow with you,â he says.
Danny and Mariaâs reunion, Margolis says, is representative of Danny âopening himself up to being happy againâ after embracing his new life in this new city. Following the death of his wife, Linda (Amy Carlson), on Blue Bloods, Danny has been âstuck in one placeâ emotionally for a long time. Thatâs finally beginning to change, though the process wonât be without conflict.
Does anyone from Blue Bloods show up in the finale?

In addition to Maria, the Boston Blue finale sees the return of Joe Hill (Will Hochman), Dannyâs nephew and Seanâs cousin. Throughout Blue Bloods, he found community with the Reagan clan. Here, he joins Danny, Sean, and the Silvers for dinner.
âJoe Hill represents such a great parallel to what Lena has gone through and is going through,â Margolis says. âIt really felt like a great opportunity to bridge the new relationships and the two shows, and also to push us forward into an understanding of Lena reconnecting with her father and her sister. Itâs a beginning, right?â
How does Boston Blue season 1 end?
Boston Blue ends with a family gathering with several special guests. Thereâs Joe, of course, but also Chris and Kristina. When Kristina acknowledges that theyâre half-sisters, Lena replies, âWe never looked at it as half or step, just one big, happy, kind of confusing family.â
Thereâs one character missing, though: Det. Brian Rodgers (Ryan Broussard), Lenaâs boyfriend. Earlier in the finale, we learned that heâs been offered a spot with the DEA, but this new job will require him to move to Washington, D.C. He told Lena prior to her being shot, but their conversation is interrupted before they can explore what the move means for their relationship.
Lena worries heâs going to break up with her, but during the final moments, we see him buying flowers for her on his way to meet the Silvers for dinner. But he doesnât make it. When he climbs into his car, a truck intentionally rams into it, pushing the vehicle into the Charles River.
Margolis and Sonnier are understandably staying quiet about Brianâs fate â and who was behind the wheel â but they did discuss what the attack means for the show going forward.
âWhether heâs with us next year or not, it galvanizes family,â Sonnier says. âOur show at its heart is a family drama. And what greater drama can you introduce when you think everything is at peace?â
