Two ATV riders made a startling discovery after deciding to stray from their usual riding routes, stumbling across a scene that would later turn out to involve a woman who had been missing for days and was believed to be in serious danger nearly 100 miles away from where she was last seen.
Kathryn Woessner, 68, had disappeared on June 3 in the Akeley area of Minnesota, a small community roughly three hours north of Minneapolis. According to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, she vanished without her personal belongings, immediately raising alarm among authorities and prompting concern for her wellbeing. Police quickly classified her as an endangered missing person due to her age and known medical conditions, which made the situation even more urgent and worrying for search teams and her loved ones.
As the search continued for several days with no confirmed sightings, fate took a dramatic turn. Three days after Woessner was reported missing, two friends, Adam Sandbeck and Mike Gravalin, set out on what was supposed to be a casual ATV ride. The pair, experienced riders familiar with the area, decided to explore a different trail than usual, heading off established paths and into less-travelled terrain they had passed by countless times before but never actually entered.
What started as an ordinary recreational ride quickly turned into something neither man could have ever expected. While travelling through a remote stretch of land, they noticed something unusual ahead: a van sitting in an isolated, rough area far from any proper road. The location alone struck them as strange, as the terrain was not suitable for a standard vehicle, especially one without off-road capability.
As they approached, their confusion deepened. The vehicle appeared out of place, abandoned or stuck in a section where it seemingly should never have been able to reach. At first glance, they could not understand how it had ended up there, surrounded by difficult ground and natural obstacles. It was then that the situation took a horrifying turn.
The men later recalled that they initially spotted what looked like a body lying in a puddle of thick mud near the van. The sight immediately froze them in place, as they tried to process what they were seeing. Sandbeck later described how, in that moment, they genuinely believed the person they had found was already dead. But as they got closer, the unimaginable happened. The figure, partially submerged and barely visible, suddenly spoke. A faint voice called out for help, breaking the silence and shocking both men into immediate action. Sandbeck later admitted that the words caught him completely off guard, describing how the situation shifted instantly from presumed tragedy to urgent rescue effort.
When they moved closer, they realised just how severe the situation was. Only the top of Woessner’s head was visible at first, with the rest of her body buried deep in thick mud and water. From the ears downward, she was almost completely submerged, trapped in a dense, muddy area that appeared similar to quicksand. According to Sandbeck, she looked as though she had been stuck there for a very long time and was in extremely poor condition.
Woessner herself reportedly told them she had become trapped in the soft, unstable ground and was unable to free herself. She described it as sinking into something that would not let her go, leaving her stranded and helpless with no way out. The men worked quickly to pull her free, carefully struggling through the difficult terrain to extract her from the mud without causing further harm.
Despite the physical effort required, Sandbeck and Gravalin managed to get her out of the dangerous position and immediately called emergency services. They used the GPS tracking system on their ATVs to provide precise coordinates to paramedics and volunteer firefighters, ensuring rescuers could reach the remote location as quickly as possible. Their quick thinking proved crucial, as the area was difficult to access and time was clearly a critical factor.
Gravalin later reflected on how unlikely the discovery was, explaining that they had ridden past the same general area for years without ever choosing that particular path. He described the moment as pure chance, emphasising that had they not decided to explore a new route that day, they likely would never have come across Woessner at all.
Sandbeck also shared details of the incident on social media, expressing shock at how events unfolded and noting that what was supposed to be a routine ride had turned into something life-changing. He wrote that instead of their planned outing, they ended up finding a missing woman in desperate need of help, adding that they were grateful they had gone off their usual route.
He also used the moment to highlight the importance of rural emergency services, praising the volunteer firefighters and paramedics who responded swiftly once they received the coordinates. In his view, those responders played a vital role in ensuring Woessner received the medical attention she needed in time, describing them as the real heroes of the situation.
After the rescue, authorities confirmed that the missing person alert for Woessner was officially cancelled. She was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment following her ordeal. Sandbeck later said he had been in contact with her afterwards and described her as strong, despite what she had been through.
