CHARLIE STAYT AND WIFE QUIETLY STAND STRONG THROUGH LIFE’S LATEST CHALLENGES CQ

BBC Breakfast star Charlie Stayt’s company has been in the red for seven years, MailOnline can reveal.

The morning show host, 61, and his wife Annie Breckell, 58, have been served a petition by HMRC after finding themselves £6,409 in the red after they filed their company’s accounts in December last year.

The couple are listed as directors of Stayt Limited, with the nature of its business stated as television programming and broadcasting activities.

But documents show that the last time it was in the black was in 2016 when it had assets of just £173.

Since then then the company finances have got steadily worse, first dropping to £214 in the red in 2017 before reaching the current figure of £6,049 which has led to the TV presenter being threatened with bankruptcy by the government agency.

Companies House documents also show that the couple borrowed almost £100,000 from the business in 2015 which was given as a ‘loan to the directors’.

This was reduced to £74,000 in 2016 but thereafter the accounts for the company make no reference to this ‘overdrawn directors’ loan account’.

Charlie and his former actress wife Annie live in a lavish £2.3 million four-bedroom home in South West London, which they bought in 2002 for £800,000.

They have two grown up children, Phoebe and Jake, who are both grown up and are believed to still live with their parents.

Despite being one of the BBC’s most high-profile presenters, Charlie largely keeps his personal life under wraps and is not on social media and often shies away from celebrity events.

Before his broadcasting career took off, he married Annie in 1995.

She previously trained at The Royal Ballet School before going on to become an actress, appearing in Carousel at The National Theatre.

But after a number of other acting roles, she retrained as a yoga teacher and now works for Balletboyz, a dance company based in Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey, close to her home.

Charlie was born in Gloucester in June 1962 and was raised in the local area alongside his two older siblings.

He attended the King’s School, Gloucester before moving onto Wycliffe College, a co-educational part-boarding school in Stonehouse. He later completed his education at Birmingham Polytechnic, now known as Birmingham City University.

After completing his studies, he worked at a local radio station in Gloucester before moving to London, where he became a host on Capital Radio and then went on to report for LBS and BBC Radio 5 live.

He started his TV career in 1995 with ITN before going on to join Five News as a reporter. After becoming a huge hit with viewers, he was promoted to the network’s prime-time bulletins and half-hour live debate programmes.

Charlie joined BBC Breakfast in 2006, which he now hosts with Naga Munchetty, 49. The pair present the programme Thursday to Saturday from Salford, Manchester but he chosen to continue living in London with his family.

He took over the post after Dan Walker left the show in 2022 to join Channel 5 News.
