Jesy Nelson’s Mum Shares The Quiet Reality Behind Her Twins’ Brave Journey

Jesy Nelson’s mother, Janice White, has shared an emotional look at the everyday reality behind the family’s life since the singer’s twin daughters were diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy Type 1.

The personal moment appears in Jesy’s upcoming Prime Video documentary, Jesy Nelson: Life Changing, which follows the former Little Mix star as she adapts to motherhood after a diagnosis that changed everything for her family.

In one scene, Janice shows a spare bedroom inside the family home. The room is carefully organised with feeding equipment, specialist medical items and toys that had once been bought for Ocean Jade and Story Monroe before the family knew what their care needs would involve.

Ocean and Story, who celebrated their first birthday in May, were born prematurely in 2025 and were later diagnosed with SMA Type 1. The rare genetic condition can cause severe muscle weakness and may affect a child’s ability to move, breathe and swallow.

For Janice, the room holds both the practical side of the twins’ care and the emotional weight of the plans the family once imagined. Some of the toys, including a rocking chair, can no longer be used because the girls need specially adapted support.

Rather than allowing the items to sit unused, Janice suggests they could be donated to hospitals or to other families who may need them. It is a quiet but powerful moment, showing both the sadness of changed expectations and the family’s wish to help others.

The documentary continues Jesy’s story after her earlier series, Jesy Nelson: Life After Little Mix, which followed her pregnancy, premature labour and early days as a mother. At that time, Jesy and her loved ones did not yet know that the twins were living with SMA1.

This new programme begins after the diagnosis and shows the emotional adjustment that followed. It also captures the medical appointments, daily care and family support surrounding Ocean and Story as Jesy works to give them the happiest and most loving childhood possible.

Jesy has also used her platform to call for SMA to be included in routine newborn screening across the UK. She believes earlier testing could give other babies a chance to receive treatment sooner, before symptoms become more advanced.

The singer first publicly shared her daughters’ diagnosis in January. She explained that her mother had noticed the girls were not moving their legs as much as expected, before further concerns around feeding led to more medical checks.

Jesy has since spoken openly about grieving the version of motherhood she once imagined, while also celebrating every milestone her daughters reach. Her honesty has connected deeply with parents caring for children with disabilities or complex medical needs.

For Ocean and Story’s first birthday, Jesy shared a moving tribute describing her daughters as strong, resilient and deeply loved. She also reflected on the idea that parenthood may not always follow the path you expected, but can still be filled with beauty, meaning and extraordinary love.

The documentary will also touch on the end of Jesy’s relationship with musician Zion Foster, the twins’ father. Jesy has said that the emotional weight of the diagnosis placed a huge strain on their romantic relationship, but both remain focused on co-parenting their daughters in a positive and loving environment.

Through it all, Janice’s support appears to be an important part of the family’s strength. Her quiet care, organisation and thoughtfulness show the role loved ones often play behind the scenes when a family is facing life-changing news.

The spare room may be filled with medical equipment and toys that now carry different meaning, but the wider story is not only one of sadness. It is also about adaptation, generosity and the fierce love surrounding two little girls who have already changed their family’s world.
