Born in 1929, Dame Patricia Routledge built a career that spanned more than seven decades — from theatre stages and Shakespearean roles to some of Britain’s most iconic television moments.
Her portrayal of the ever-ambitious, etiquette-obsessed Hyacinth Bucket (“pronounced Bouquet!”) made her a household name and a symbol of British comedy at its finest. The show, which ran from 1990 to 1995, continues to delight audiences across generations, with reruns still airing around the world.
Beyond Keeping Up Appearances, Dame Patricia’s career included award-winning performances in the West End and Broadway. She received an Olivier Award for her musical theatre work and was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in 2017 for her contributions to drama and charity.
