Dame Judi Dench has revealed the most heartbreaking update yet on her deteriorating eyesight â admitting she can no longer recognise her closest friends, more than 13 years after being diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration.
The beloved 90-year-old actress opened up during a moving joint interview with her friend of five decades, Sir Ian McKellen, while the pair promoted a new Shakespeare learning initiative. Fans, who had long wondered why Judi has increasingly avoided on-camera work, were stunned by her candour.
âPeople think Iâm being grand â but I simply canât see.â
Judi explained that her condition has worsened to the point where she can no longer read, watch television, or clearly see the faces in front of her.
âPeople think, âOh, get her â sheâs gone very grand,ââ she said. âBut itâs because I canât see. I canât see the television, canât see to read.â
When asked whether she can still see Ian sitting beside her, she replied softly:
âI can see your outline⊠and I know you so well with your Macbeth scarf. But I canât recognise anyone.â
Ian responded gently, âWe can see you,â bringing a brief smile to Judiâs face â a moment that left viewers deeply moved.
A slow retreat from the spotlight
Her revelation comes after fans noticed her quiet withdrawal from major acting roles. Her last big-screen appearance was in 2022âs Allelujah, and Judi has taken part in fewer interviews over recent years â each hinting at struggles she faced behind closed doors.

âYes â sometimes!â
But the reality remains painful. Judi revealed that during a recent dinner, her partner David Mills had to cut her food because she couldnât see what was on her plate.
âHe would hand something to me on a fork â and thatâs how I ate,â she said.

In recent years, Judi has spoken openly about the growing difficulty of learning scripts. At a Vision Foundation event in 2021, she revealed she now needs friends to repeat lines to her âover and over and over againâ because she can no longer visualise words on the page.
âI need to find a machine that teaches me my lines and tells me where they appear,â she joked with Graham Norton â a stark contrast to the days when she could recite entire Shakespeare plays from memory.
Speaking at the Chelsea Flower Show earlier this year, she admitted she currently has no plans for future acting projects, saying bluntly:
