Victoria Derbyshire is a British journalist, newsreader and broadcaster who has been on our screens and airwaves for almost 30 years. She joined BBC Radio 5 back in 1998 and her career has gone from strength to strength since.
She is known for covering some of the biggest global stories, both on the radio and TV, including 9/11, general elections and the Olympic Games. She has worked on self-titled shows as well as other hugely popular current affairs programmes, including Panorama and Watchdog.
Despite viewers seeing so much of her on television, there have recently been some unearthed photos of her. We take a look at Victoria’s rise to fame and her years of youth.

Victoria as a child growing up in Lancashire
Victoria previously opened up on living with an abusive father.
She told BBC: “Growing up, I remember my whole body tensing every time I heard my father’s key in the back door.
“What mood would he be in when he came home from work? Would he provoke an argument? Would it lead to him hitting me, whipping me with his belt or just slapping me round the back of my head?
“I was fortunate I could escape sometimes to my best friend’s house down the road to get out of his way.”

The BBC presenter also admitted that school was a “respite” from her home life. She added: “My father would go to work again, and I’d go to school, which meant respite from the disruptive shouting and cruel violence.
“The love in our lives came from my amazing mum who did everything she could to make up for his failings.”

Victoria Derbyshire on BBC Panorama
Victoria has presented many hard-hitting shows.
One key moment in her career was when she discussed the effects of the Covid pandemic on those who were stuck in abusive relationships, suffering from domestic violence.
In it, she returned to the house where I grew up, for the first time in 35 years.
