Cat Deeley has dropped a massive hint that Ant and Dec are set to bring back the legendary kids’ show SMTV Live, following their departure from Saturday Night Takeaway.
Appearing on This Morning, the 48-year-old host revealed that her former co-presenters, Ant and Dec, are keen to relaunch the beloved show that made them household names in the ’90s and early 2000s. She was joined by SMTV alumnus Stephen Mulhern, 47, who reminisced fondly about the programme while clips from his early TV career played on-screen.
As Stephen discussed how much he missed the days of Saturday morning kids’ TV, Cat teased that the dynamic duo might be planning a comeback. “Actually, Ant and Dec have been talking about maybe bringing back a Saturday morning kids’ show. It would be amazing if they did,” she revealed. Ben Shephard, 50, who was also in the studio, added: “Saturday morning kids’ stuff,” seemingly confirming what Cat had hinted at.
SMTV Live originally aired from 1998 to 2003, quickly becoming a staple of British children’s television. The show was known for its quirky sketches like Chums and Wonky Donkey, as well as featuring celebrity guests and musical performances, attracting millions of young viewers each weekend.
Ant, Dec, and Cat left the show in 2001 at the height of its success to focus on prime-time projects like Pop Idol and Saturday Night Takeaway. Stephen Mulhern later joined the team, taking the show through its final years.
Fans have been eagerly awaiting a revival ever since the 20th-anniversary special aired in 2020, during which Ant and Dec reunited with Cat to reflect on their time on the show. Last year, during the emotional live finale of Saturday Night Takeaway, the hosts got teary-eyed as they said goodbye to their long-running show.![]()
The star-studded farewell episode featured appearances from Girls Aloud, Josie Gibson, Scarlett Moffatt, Ashley Roberts, and Davina McCall, among others. An emotional Dec shared with the audience: “We’ve truly adored every second… what’s happened is beyond our wildest dreams.”
Ant added, “This is the kind of show Dec and I watched every Saturday night growing up, so it’s been an honour and a privilege to have made this show and to have been part of your Saturday nights for over 20 years.” Dec continued: “When we started back in 2002, we thought we’d be lucky if we got to do this for a couple of years — what’s happened is beyond our wildest dreams. We’ve truly adored every second but there’s one thing we’ve never, ever forgotten and that’s the fact this isn’t our show — it’s your show. So we’d like to say a massive thank you to you, our incredible audience.”
