Coronation Street actor Charlie Lawson, 64, has revealed that something has “gone seriously wrong” with his health after being rushed to the hospital this week.

The beloved soap star, who is best known for playing Jim McDonald, shared the alarming news with fans on social media. In a video posted to X, Charlie explained he had been struggling to walk after falling twice, and was in “great pain.” He said that he can no longer stand on his tiptoes and has had to rely on special care to manage his condition.

“I’m fine, I just simply can’t walk properly. I’m in great pain, and I can’t stand on my tiptoes now,” Charlie said. “If I stand up, I just fall over, so something seriously has gone wrong. I’ll keep you posted.”
The actor, who married his long-time love Debbie Stanley in 2023, was seen in the hospital in Macclesfield waiting to see an osteopath, with plans to transfer to Salford Royal’s spinal unit for further treatment. He humorously acknowledged the situation, saying, “Encore une fois!!!” (French for ‘once again’) as he posted the video.

Charlie had earlier revealed that he underwent an MRI scan and was awaiting results from a spinal surgeon after visiting the hospital following a physio appointment. “Hi folks, went to physio this morning and she sent me straight to A&E,” Charlie wrote on social media. “They examined me, I have an MRI scan, and I’m sitting waiting for the results. They’ve whisked me back in for more examinations, so it’s not going awfully well at the moment.”
While fans expressed concern, Charlie kept them updated, thanking them for their support as he awaited further medical opinions. “Thanks darling, awaiting the opinion of the spinal surgeon,” he shared in a message to one fan.
Known for his role as Jim McDonald on Coronation Street, Charlie has been a familiar face on the soap for years. He has made several returns to the show since his character’s departure in 2018, but previously admitted he doesn’t expect to return again, due to changing times and a shift in how the show operates.
Speaking to the Daily Mirror, he remarked, “It wouldn’t shock me if Jim dies in Australia. I think it would be a terrible waste of a character, but I wouldn’t be broken-hearted because I’ve been back seven or eight times, which is pretty damn good.”
Charlie also reflected on the changes in the show since his last appearance, admitting, “The whole world has changed. I’m not sure how Jim would react to 24 genders in Weatherfield. If the writers had the courage, he’d probably say that was nonsense.”
Jim McDonald, who was married to Liz McDonald (played by Beverley Callard), had a turbulent relationship marred by alcoholism, infidelity, and imprisonment. His character was last seen in 2018 in a storyline involving a fake daughter, which later led to his arrest for a scam.
As Charlie faces these health challenges, fans are left wondering what the future holds for him. With his ongoing medical battles, he remains in high spirits, staying connected to his fans as he navigates this difficult time.
