Actor Stephen Graham may be best known for his gritty, powerhouse performances in This Is England, Boardwalk Empire, and Boiling Point, but behind the scenes, he plays an even more cherished role: devoted husband and hands-on father.
In a rare joint interview this week, Graham and his wife, actress and producer Hannah Walters, opened up about how they manage to raise two “talented, lovely, and incredibly grounded” children — despite the chaos of their overlapping film and television careers.
The couple, who met in drama school and have now been married for over 15 years, say their parenting success comes down to one simple but powerful principle: a special kind of love rooted in teamwork, communication, and emotional presence.
Balancing Hollywood and Home Life
“People always ask us, ‘How do you do it?’” Walters said during the interview. “The truth is, it’s not always easy. There are times when one of us is away for weeks filming, and the other’s holding down the fort at home. But we always come back to our core — the kids and each other.”
Graham nodded in agreement. “We tag-team, constantly. If I’m filming a series, Hannah’s there making sure the school runs are sorted. When she’s producing or acting, I switch gears completely. We don’t treat our careers as separate — we run it all as a unit.”
The couple share two children: Grace, 17, who’s already showing interest in performing arts, and Alfie, 15, who has a talent for music and a reputation for being “incredibly respectful and mature beyond his years,” according to a teacher quoted in the interview.
The Secret of Love
While many celebrity parents lean on nannies and rigid schedules, Graham and Walters say their real secret lies in what they call “love without ego.”
“We never put our careers above each other or the kids,” said Graham. “Love, for us, is in the details — the small check-ins, the late-night chats with the kids after a long day, the support when one of us has a meltdown on set or misses home. That emotional presence means everything.”
Walters added, “We make sure the kids know that no matter where we are — on set, in another country, or just busy — they are never alone emotionally. That’s something we both missed at times growing up, and we were determined to do differently.”
Raising Children in the Spotlight — Without the Pressure
Despite both parents being in the industry, Grace and Alfie have been raised with a clear understanding of privacy and values. “We’re not trying to raise stars,” said Walters. “We’re raising people. If they want to go into acting or music, that’s fine. But they’ll do it with respect, kindness, and a work ethic.”
Graham added with a laugh, “They still have to do the dishes and tidy their rooms like everyone else.”
Both children have already dipped their toes into creative projects — Grace recently assisted on the set of a short film Hannah co-produced, and Alfie contributed original music for a school play that impressed even the toughest critics (his parents included).
Fans and Friends Applaud

Social media lit up with praise after the interview aired, with fans calling the couple “a model for modern parenting” and “a breath of fresh air in an industry known for chaos.”
Fellow actor Vicky McClure, a longtime friend of the family, commented, “Stephen and Hannah are two of the most genuine people I know — and their kids are proof of it.”
Looking Ahead
With multiple projects on the horizon — including Graham’s upcoming crime thriller and Walters’ directorial debut — the couple remains as committed as ever to keeping their family first.
“The industry will come and go,” Graham said. “But what we’re building at home — that’s forever.”
In a world where fame often comes at the cost of family connection, Stephen Graham and Hannah Walters are showing that with love, humility, and a little planning, you really can have both a successful career and a thriving family.
