After a turbulent few years, beloved TV presenter and mum-of-three Helen Skelton is finally embracing a new chapter — and at the heart of her fresh start is someone very special: Gethin Jones.
“My life and the kids’ has changed so much since he came along,” Helen admits with a soft smile and that unmistakable spark of renewed joy.
Though she chooses her words carefully, it’s clear that Gethin has brought a calm, grounding presence into her once-chaotic world.
“I don’t feel like I’m carrying everything on my own anymore,” she shares. “Just having someone who checks in when I’m exhausted, helps with school runs, or quietly clears up after dinner — it’s the little things, but they mean everything.”
Gethin has also bonded quickly with Helen’s three children — Ernie, 9, Louis, 8, and Elsie, 3. Whether he’s seen kicking a ball in the park with the boys or gently holding Elsie’s hand on countryside walks, his presence seems to have slipped seamlessly into their daily lives.
“He’s not replacing anyone,” Helen adds, “but having him around makes it all feel a little less like a solo mission. It’s just… easier to breathe.”
Prioritising the Outdoors
As the face of Countryfile and On The Farm, Helen’s love for nature runs deep — and it remains her daily non-negotiable.
“I’ve always loved being outdoors — it grounds me,” says Helen. “I grew up on a farm surrounded by green fields. Even when life is chaos, I still make time for a walk, a paddle, or a swim. It’s as important to me as brushing my teeth.”
How to Conquer Big Goals? One Step at a Time
From solo kayaking the Amazon River to training for Strictly Come Dancing, Helen’s tackled huge challenges — but her secret lies in her mindset.
“There’s a fine line between brave and stupid,” she laughs. “I never think about the big picture. I break things down. I didn’t kayak 2010 miles — I just did 16 miles, over and over. Same with marathons: I’ve only ever run five miles, many times.”
Even during Strictly, she avoided future stress. “I never let Gorka [Marquez] talk about next week’s dance. Just today. Just tomorrow. That’s how you move forward.”
Raising Healthy Kids – And Healthy Habits
Helen’s love of wellness extends beyond nature — she’s also passionate about oral health, for herself and her children.
“I’ve had fillings, so I’m strict — I brush twice a day and always carry those little interdental brushes,” she explains. “But not everyone can afford basic dental care.”
Philips Sonicare research shows 79% of people believe teeth affect first impressions, and 61% say poor oral hygiene damages self-confidence. Helen works to make brushing fun for her kids, turning it into a game and reinforcing the routine daily.
When Sleep is a Luxury
With three kids, sleep is rare — but Helen has learned to go with the flow.
“None of mine sleep — it’s like whack-a-mole at night,” she laughs. “They all come into my bed. But I’ve stopped worrying. My friends from Tonga and Samoa co-sleep, and think we’re mad not to. One day they’ll be at uni, and this will all be over. I’m soaking it up while it lasts.”
Saying Goodbye to Mum Guilt
At 41, Helen’s done with feeling guilty for being a working mum — and encourages others to let go, too.
“We waste so much energy on mum guilt,” she says. “You need to work — how else do you buy the football boots? My mum’s advice is always, ‘Stop feeling guilty and go kick a ball with them.’ That stuck with me.”
She’s also learned to shelf stress when it becomes too much. “You can’t compartmentalise everything, but sometimes, you just have to let the noise fade.”
With nature in her routine, her kids by her side, and a quietly supportive new presence in her life, Helen Skelton is finally living on her own terms — with no apologies, no guilt, and plenty of reasons to smile.
