Bradley Walsh was offended by what one contestant said on The Chase. Fiona, Becky, Derek and Amitabh made up the team of four contestants hoping to test their general knowledge skills on the ITV quiz show.
Amitabh from Delhi, India was first up to test his luck against one of the UK’s best quizzers, who in this case was Mark Labbett aka The Beast. The contestant moved to the UK just five years ago, so some questions posed quite a challenge.
She bagged herself £8,000 in the quick-fire question round and managed to secure herself a spot in the final. Derek from Wirral followed in Becky’s successful footsteps as he earned himself a position in the final chase, increasing the shared prize pot to £14,000.
But it was Fiona who stopped Bradley Walsh in his tracks. The contestant from Oldham admitted she had previously took part in BBC One quiz show Pointless, hosted by Alexander Armstrong and Richard Osman.
Bradley Walsh was speechless, and when Fiona realised the host hadn’t uttered a word yet, she joked: “I shouldn’t have mentioned Pointless.”
The ITV presenter said: “So we’re your second choice basically.” Fiona said: “Never Brad, I’ve obviously been dying to get on the show.” Fiona explained she didn’t win on Pointless, but hoped she’d have better luck with Becky and Derek on The Chase.
Still offended she had already taken part in the rival quiz show, Brad said: “Not in a million years are you going to win now.” He joked by giving the player an impossible question to answer: “Here’s your first question, what’s my mum Margaret’s third middle name?” The presenter added: “Pointless! Are you kidding me?”
Bradley soon returned to usual gameplay as Fiona tested her luck against The Beast. After a tense head-to-head, Fiona secured her spot in the final and increased the cash pot to a whopping £20,000.
Fiona, Becky and Derek took part in the final chase, when they achieved a combined score of 19. However, The Beast caught the team with just three seconds remaining. When the contestants came to terms with their unfortunate loss, Bradley Walsh joked: “Well, there’s always Pointless.”
The Chase airs weekdays at 5pm on ITV1 and ITVX
