BBC Announces Thrilling New Crime Drama The Northumbria Mysteries Starring Robson Green — Coastal Secrets, Twisted Crimes, and an Unlikely Duo Set to Shock Viewers
The BBC is bringing a bold new crime drama to the North East, and it’s already sending shockwaves through fans of British thrillers. Titled The Northumbria Mysteries, the series is set to star Grantchester’s own Robson Green in the lead role, marking a return of high-profile production to the Northumberland coastline.

Green will play Joe Ruby, described as “a jack-of-all-trades whose life has been shaped by mistakes, regrets, and missed opportunities.” His partner, yet-to-be-cast DI Rose O’Connell, is an Oxford-educated investigator — a rarefied intellectual, a deep thinker with a brilliant mind and ice-cool disposition. “In a classic odd-couple pairing, Joe and Rose combine their talents as they frustrate, confound, and ultimately surprise one another while unravelling a series of compelling crime mysteries,” the BBC notes in a press release.
The backdrop of Northumberland, with its sweeping coastal vistas, rugged market towns, and atmospheric landscapes, plays a central role in the series’ storytelling. Executive producer Lesley Douglas, co-founder of Lonesome Pine Productions, said:
