Bunnie Xo is breaking her silence following the news that she and Jelly Roll are getting divorced, and revealing that they are “still having a baby together.”
The podcaster, 46, shared the news during the Thursday, June 18 episode of Dumb Blonde, where she acknowledged that listeners will need “to understand why this is happening, where this is coming from, and what we’re doing moving forward.”
“We’re literally settling our divorce in like… We’ve done it in like, what? Three weeks? Two weeks?” she said, before adding, “We’re still having a baby together.”
“So, we have been the most unconventional couple that you guys have ever encountered,” Bunnie, real name Alisa DeFord, shared. “We’re going to co-parent together. J is my best friend. Like, this isn’t what you guys think this is. Nobody cheated on the other person. It’s literally just we served our purpose for each other.”
Bunnie acknowledged that fans are “so hung up” on the couple’s past, but now their “future is so much more important and being happy and healthy and best friends through this is probably the biggest gift that we could have given each other,” she said.
Bunnie added that during their marriage, they tried to get pregnant several times and lost four embryos. “It wrecked me emotionally, spiritually, physically,” she shared, before explaining that they were both on hormones in an effort to have a child together. “In a way, I kind of think J and I are trauma-bonded,” she said. Bunnie Xo’s nickname for the singer is “J.”
Bunnie wrote in her memoir Stripped Down, published in February, that she and Jelly, real name Jason DeFord, had found a surrogate, and Bunnie planned to start her IVF stims “soon.”
Then on Mother’s Day, the former couple had an argument, and she told Jelly Roll, 41, “Well, then file the f—ing divorce papers.”
Bunnie then packed a bag and left, and they didn’t speak for “weeks” after that, she said: “He was so mad and we were so emotional that he ended up doing exactly what I told him to do and filing the divorce papers.”
Bunnie went on to claim that the divorce “was not mutual.” “Was I blindsided?,” Bunnie asked, before stating, “It was not mutual. Even though I told him to file the divorce papers, I was speaking out of anger and frustration. But was it necessary for us to have a wakeup call and to actually start having these real conversations? Absolutely.”
She reiterated that she believed they should have gone to therapy to “figure s— out,” but says the musician didn’t agree. While it took her a while to accept it, the former couple is now “ending this marriage on the best possible terms that you could ever have a divorce.”
Bunnie then shared that, as part of the settlement, she would move into their compound with their future child. “I’m so excited to live my life through a child’s eyes, which is why this baby journey, I’m not going to let it break me, and I’m not going to deter it,” she said. “And J has been so f—ing great about us still having a baby together and he wants the same thing. And we’re just going to raise little Nugget as one big happy family.”
Before their divorce, Bunnie wrote about her experience with IVF in her memoir, sharing they had been on a fertility journey since Oct. 31, 2019.
“We have decided to use my own eggs with J’s sperm — and we are trying for twins,” she said at the time. “I’m so nervous, because I’ve waited this long to have kids with someone I knew would be a great father — and to be able to make sure they have the best life.”
“We’re going to raise these babies in love and give them everything we were never given,” Bunnie added. “I can’t wait to see a piece of me and him running around outside of our bodies.”
