  • American Idol delayed its Top 14 elimination for the first time due to unprecedented voting volume
  • Host Ryan Seacrest emphasized the importance of ensuring accuracy with tens of millions of votes cast
  • The results will be announced on Monday, April 6

It’s been on the air for nearly 25 years, but there are still some firsts to be had for American Idol!

Season 24’s Top 14 contestants performed songs of faith on the show’s Monday, March 30 episode. But when it came time to dwindle down the lineup to the Top 12, host Ryan Seacrest announced a curveball.

For the first time in Idol history, the votes — which had been coming in throughout the night — were not ready in time, pushing the night’s elimination to next week.

“We have had five ways to vote tonight. Tens of millions of votes coming in at a rate we have never seen before. Truly unprecedented,” Seacrest said on the live broadcast. “And to ensure complete accuracy with the numbers, I was literally just told we are not going to announce eliminations tonight.”

The host, 51, said it was “the first time it’s ever happened,” and he would know, as he’s hosted every season of the series since 2002.

“[We] want to make sure we get every vote counted and every vote right. We’ll carry, for those votes, get everything verified,” he explained. “So at the top of next week’s show, your results will be revealed live on this stage. There you have it, America! Tens of millions of votes.”

Judges Lionel RichieCarrie Underwood and Luke Bryan were seen with shocked expressions on their faces as Seacrest announced the news, and the 14 contestants on stage also looked stunned. Some laughed and smiled, while others stood with mouths agape as they processed what it meant for their Idol future.

The Top 12 will be announced at the beginning of the show’s next episode, on Monday, April 6. Seacrest teased that next week’s performances will be the judge’s song contest, but with a ‘90s twist.

Prior to sharing the elimination news, Seacrest asked each judge individually what they thought of this year’s crop of contestants, including Hannah Harper and Keyla Richardson.

Richie, 76, said this year’s group is “probably the most diverse” out of all of Idol’s classes, while Underwood, 43, said she felt that the contestants were able to “rise to the occasion and show us what they’ve got.”

“I don’t know how America chooses,” Bryan, 49, added. “You gotta trust your gut as a voter at home and just pick the artists that are on stage that make you smile, make you laugh, make you cry. I don’t know how America’s gonna do it.”
