BBC Gone Fishing’s Ted dies as Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse share touching tributes
Ted the Patterdale Terrier mix, has sadly died
Tributes have been paid to Ted the dog, a regular feature in BBC’s hit show Mortimer and Whitehouse: Gone Fishing. Ted the Patterdale Terrier mix, has sadly passed away, with the show’s stars Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse sharing touching tributes to their treasured furry friend.
Bob wrote: “So very, very sad. Lovely Ted, the best companion and the greatest little chum. Going to miss him so much… and away boss.” Meanwhile, Paul added: “Bye bye, Ted, old friend. He wasn’t a dog, he was a species all of his own. He’s gone to the great briefcase emporium in the sky. We will really miss you, mate.”
The show’s Executive Producer and Ted’s Owner, Lisa Clark, added that her four-legged friend will be “sorely missed” in a touching statement. She wrote: “Ted was a much-loved family pet as well as a treasured companion to Paul and Bob on Gone Fishing, The Express reports.
“He took fame in his little stride and loved nothing better than messing around on the riverbanks, nicking jammy doggers from Bob and bait from Paul. He will be sorely missed both at home and on screen. We’ll never forget him. He is survived at home by Bo the Briard.”
The BBC show follows the veteran comics and lifelong friends Bob and Paul as they head out on fishing adventures across the UK. Ted, who was rescued from a dog home in 2013 and taken in by Lisa, was a staple on the show and adored by their loyal fanbase. He even had his own Instagram account, which boasted more than 200,000 followers.
The page shared a sweet tribute to the late pup after the news hit the headlines, writing: “Sad news about our little Ted [heartbroken emoji] 2013 – 2026. Always loved, never forgotten… and away, little fella.”
It didn’t take long before the comments section was filled up with sympathies for the sweet terrier, with one user posting: “News I never wanted to hear. Lovely Ted! Rest well, buddy, you were, and always will be, much loved by everyone.”
Another wrote: “This is so sad to see. He was an icon of the show, and the bond he had with Paul and Bob was lovely to see. Will be so sad not seeing him on our screens anymore.” Ted will appear in an upcoming episode of the ninth series, which will air later this year and mark his final appearance on the show.
The show will return to the airwaves on October 26, with fans treated to eight episodes instead of the usual six. A teaser for the series featured a voiceover saying: “Two muppers talking absolute carp again. But let’s be honest, you don’t tune in just for them, you come for me too! See! I’m their catch of the day!”
Speaking about the return of the series, Bob said: “We wanted to be free to pick the places we’ve always wanted to go and places which, sort of, personally meant something to us. So, it’s just a slightly different approach, you know, rather than just focusing on species of fish.”
His co-host, Paul, teased: “The thrust of this series is that we go to places that we’ve either fished before or resonate with us from our past or mean a lot, and so I think there’s maybe an extra level of poignancy to this series, it’s a little bit more heartfelt.”
