GMB: Bride tearful as she recalls sister-in-law covering her in back liquid at her wedding
Gemma Monk broke down in tears on Good Morning Britain today as she explained what led up to the fateful moment that her dress was ruined when her sister-in-law threw black paint at her on her wedding day.
The bride to be was set to marry her partner of two decades, Ken, in a ceremony filled with love and family. However, it was abruptly ruined when sister-in-law Antonia Eastwood flung paint at her £1,800 white gown and left it ruined.
Eastwood – who is married to Gemma’s brother Ashley – was handed a 10-month jail term suspended for 12 months over the vindictive May 2024 attack. Speaking on the ITV breakfast show today, she explained: “Things have been taken out of proportion in the reason why she did this. All the allegations she has put forward are all false.”
Gemma explained how the day had got off to a great start, as her and childhood sweetheart Ken prepared to tie the knot. “I was getting ready, my dad came to collect me and I arrived down the road from the venue because the guests were still outside,” she said.
“We waited down there before we went in and when we got the ok, my dad drove me and my bridesmaids to the venue. We got out and had a photo with the photographer and I was then told not to get out here and we were going to the bridal tour.”
She recalled how she then went to the bridal door and was joined by her daughter, niece and her maid of honour and was taken into the bridal corridor to wait for her father, who was parking the car.
Gemma cried as she said how she heard her name being called, and as she looked away from the door – thinking someone had tread on her dress or veil – she then realised she had been splashed.
“I knew instantly who it was. There’s not many people I don’t get on with. I’m not a hated person; I’ve got a kind heart. I only want what’s best for my brother,” she said, as she broke down.
Gemma’s brother and sister-in-law were not invited to the wedding but her brother’s ex-wife and children were invited. She was horrified that someone would do this to her.
Ken, meanwhile, is standing oblivious at the altar – before the registrar revealed what had happened. He knew instantly who was behind it – and both of them expected some verbal comments at the wedding.
However, the pair decided to carry on with their wedding and after switching dresses, Gemma and Ken tied the knot. The couple then plan to renew their vows next year – without the drama.
Speaking for the first time after the incident, Antonia said: “I had a full-blown panic attack on the day I was sentenced. I was petrified I’d go to prison. It has all taken its toll.”
She claimed the black paint happened to be in her car by coincidence, adding: “My daughter Hollie had just given birth to our first grandchild and I’d been using some black paint to do our new granddaughter’s handprints and footprints.”
