Eric Dane was a proud father of two.
The late actor first became a dad in March 2010 when he welcomed his first child, daughter Billie Beatrice Dane, with his wife, Rebecca Gayheart. Their family expanded in December 2011 with the birth of their second daughter, Georgia Geraldine Dane.
“I never had a family, and now I do,” Eric told PEOPLE of his daughters. “I know I’m a very lucky guy.”
Eric and Gayheart eventually split in 2018, and the actress filed for divorce from her longtime partner that same year, citing irreconcilable differences. The couple amicably co-parented for seven years before Gayheart requested to dismiss her divorce from Eric in March 2025.
One month later, Eric revealed he had been diagnosed with ALS in a statement to PEOPLE. “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter,” he said.
The Grey’s Anatomy actor died on Feb. 19, with his family telling PEOPLE in a statement that he spent his “final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”

Ahead of her birth, the couple revealed they were starting a family in September 2009. The Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood actress showed off her baby bump during a stroll, and a source told PEOPLE they were “definitely happy” to be pregnant because they’d “been trying for so long.”
Eric shared his plans for the delivery room in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres in February 2010, a month before their child arrived. “I’ll be in the room,” he said. “I’m going to stay close to my wife and make sure that she is all right. I’m really excited. I’m also very interested.”
He teased that the name they chose for their daughter would be “straight down the middle” between weird and traditional.
Shortly after Billie was born, her name was announced, and years later, Eric shared how they chose the moniker on Harry Connick Jr.’s talk show in 2016. “[Billie’s] named after my father … Whether it was a boy or a girl, the firstborn was gonna be a Billie,” he said.
Now a teenager, Billie is a model and dancer.
“Congratulations Billie on a BEAUTIFUL dance showcase today #proudmom,” Gayheart captioned a post on her Instagram Stories of her daughter holding flowers in December 2021.
Billie has made occasional appearances on the red carpet with both of her parents. In 2022, she attended the Chrysalis Butterfly Ball in Brentwood, Calif., where Billie accompanied her mom. Two years later, Billie attended the Bad Boys: Ride or Die premiere in support of her father, who was part of the cast.

When it came to supporting her dad, Billie and her sister have watched “every episode” of Grey’s Anatomy, in which the actor starred from season 3 to 9. “They’ve watched everything,” he said on Live with Kelly and Mark in 2024, adding that they’ll “never” stream Euphoria.
Billie graduated from middle school in June 2024, and her mom celebrated the milestone with a sweet post on Instagram.
“I know you are more than ready for this next chapter,” Gayheart wrote. “I have watched you juggle school, ballet and life with tenacity, grace and humor. You’re as beautiful inside as you are on the outside. I’m beyond proud of you Billie and love you 4ever and always.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Gayheart shared a glimpse into her daughter’s mindset at the start of lockdown.
“She is the only one in the family who is thriving and not just surviving,” the actress wrote on Instagram in April 2020. “She loves being home and finds the joy in most everything she does . I’m so thankful for this kid 🥳💙.”
In an August 2024 interview with Variety, Eric said that Georgia had an important question for him once she’d had the chance to watch her dad in Grey’s Anatomy.
“My 12-year-old, when she started watching it a couple of years ago looked at me and said, ‘Dad, where did your abs go?’ She was serious. She wasn’t making a joke,” he said.
In November 2025, Gayheart appeared on the Broad Ideas podcast and spoke about how their family was navigating Eric’s neurodegenerative disorder at the time. The actress said she was telling her kids that “we show up for people no matter what” as their dad’s ALS progressed.
“He is our family. He is your father,” Gayheart said she told her daughters. “We show up, and we try to do it with some dignity and some grace and just get through it.”
