STRICTLY Come Dancing has given viewers plenty of glitter, glamour and gasp-worthy moments – but nothing gets fans talking more than a shock dance-off.
From a boyband star booted out far too soon to a screen legend toppling a chart-topping pop icon, here are the most jaw-dropping eliminations ever.
Over the years, some of the show’s biggest names have found themselves fighting for survival on the ballroom floor, leaving viewers stunned as the judges sent favourites home.
From surprise exits that sparked fan fury to dance-offs that went down in Strictly history, these dramatic showdowns proved that in the world of sequins and sambas – no one is safe.
So who were the stars that left fans open-mouthed and shouting at their tellys?
Here’s a look back at the most shocking Strictly dance-offs of all time – and the results that nobody saw coming.
Aston Merrygold
The former JLS star was a constant favourite, until he was put up against Saturdays singer Mollie King in the dance-off in week seven of the competition in 2017.
The results proved to be an emotional one for the competitors and judges alike as the decision came down to Shirley Ballas’ decision alone.
As each judge was told to make their choice, each declared that they felt that NEITHER couple should’ve ended up in the bottom two.
Shirley was given the deciding vote after Bruno Tonioli and Darcy Bussell chose to save Aston, while Craig Revel Horwood opted to keep Mollie in the competition.
Despite Mollie appearing in the bottom two for the second week in a row, Shirley decided to keep them for one more week and sent Aston home.
After their fate was sealed, an emotional Janette Manrara burst into tears as she told Tess Daly: “I just have to say honestly, I don’t think I’m ever going to have the opportunity to dance with someone like you again.
EastEnders’ Maisie Smith, 22, warns future parents off her name after a series of embarrassing conversations you won’t have thought of
“Someone who is so talented, so lovely and such a good friend.”
Aston also praised his partner and his time on the show, and said: “I’ve had friends who have done the show before and they’ve gone ‘you’re going to have the most amount of fun from start to finish, whatever it is’ and honestly they weren’t lying!
“Everything, from this lady to every single person in here, these four judges, yourself, Claudia, all you amazing lot up there that I get to see and spend so much time with.
“I’ve made some amazing friends and honestly, I’ve had the best time, it’s been amazing.”
Max George
Max George was eliminated from Strictly Come Dancing in the dance-off in 2020, losing to EastEnders star Maisie Smith and her dance partner Gorka Márquez.
Despite Max and his dancer partner Dianne Buswell being a popular duo with fans, the pair found themselves in the dreaded dance-off.
Judges Craig Revel Horwood and guest judge Anton Du Beke chose to save Masie and Gorka.
Anton admitted: “Well, I have to say it’s so close. They were both immaculate through that dance; it literally was just the smallest timing. For me, I’m going to have to save Maisie and Gorka.”
However, head judge Shirley said she would have saved George and Dianne, but she was outvoted.
Max became the third celebrity to exit the competition.
But two years later, Max and Maisie got into a relationship and went public in August 2022.
The pair grew close on the Strictly Come Dancing tour in 2022.
They moved in together later that year and have been inseparable ever since.
Despite criticism over their 13-year age gap, they have gone from strength to strength, with Maisie calling Max “The One”.
Gabby Logan
Gabby Logan was voted off Strictly Come Dancing in 2007 – finishing in fourth place.
She was partnered with James Jordan and was eliminated from the competition in Week 8, after a dance-off with Penny Lancaster-Stewart.
They both performed a Samba – but Penny had the edge due to Gabby’s timing issues.
Head judge Len Goodman added that she needed more “bounce action”.
Gabby later revealed she felt people “didn’t like me” because she was seen as too competitive.
She acknowledged that her intense desire to win, a trait that served her well in sports, was not well-received by the Strictly audience.
The broadcaster said she was upset over the exit and even cried on her sofa.
But her husband, Kenny Logan, who also competed on the show, offered comfort and tried to reassure her.
Michelle Williams
Michelle Williams exited Strictly Come Dancing in 2010 in Week 7.
This came after the public and judges’ scores placed her in the bottom two, alongside Ann Widdecombe.
Shockingly, Ann Widdecombe survived the public vote despite finishing last on the leaderboard.
This meant the Destiny’s Child singer and her professional partner, Brendan Cole, were eliminated from the competition.
Her final dance on the show was a Paso Doble to The Guess Who’s “American Woman”.
The judges criticised Michelle’s dance for being “very stiff,” lacking balanced lines, and losing energy.
Bruno Tonioli acknowledged that she had the “right energy” but felt that she lost it too many times during the performance.
He noted that she “lost balance” and that her “arms – all the lines were not flowing all the way through”.
Craig Revel Horwood pointed out technical issues, commenting that she hit the floor too hard during her appels and failed to bring her feet together.
He described the overall performance as “very stiff and aggressive”.
Before her shock exit, Michelle had an ankle injury after a fall in training, which caused her to miss some rehearsals.
Despite the injury, she was determined to continue.
But there was speculation that her injury could have led to a forced exit from the show.
Daisy Lowe
Daisy Lowe exited Strictly Come Dancing in November 2016, becoming the eighth celebrity to leave the competition, with Blackpool a mere week away.
She was partnered with Aljaž Skorjanec, and was ultimately voted off after a dance-off against Greg Rutherford and his dance partner and Natalie Lowe.
It was a close competition as Darcey Bussell commented: “Both couples upped their game beautifully, gave great performances making it very difficult, but the couple that had more dynamic effect are Greg and Natalie.”
Bruno Tonioli, however, chose to save Daisy and Aljaž and said: “What a clash of titans, Venus the Goddess of Love and Mars the God of War both wonderful, but for me I kinda found the Godness of Love irresistible, Daisy and Aljaž.”
Head judge Len Goodman had the casting vote and chose to save Greg Rutherford for a “more polished” performance.
Talking to Tess Daly about her Strictly experience, Daisy reflected: “I’ve loved every minute, everyone here is so unbelievable you have no idea!
“The make-up, costume, production, cameras, everyone, the judges, thank you so much for everything I’ve loved every moment.
“Hang on, I’ve missed one, my hero (to Aljaž), thank you for everything!”
Michelle Visage
Michelle Visage exited Strictly Come Dancing in November 2019 after she and partner Giovanni Pernice were eliminated during the Blackpool week results show.
They faced Saffron Barker and AJ Pritchard in the dance-off, who all four of the judges ultimately chose to save.
Michelle performed a Couple’s Choice street commercial dance to “Vogue,” which received a score of 32 points from the judges.
The routine was a tribute to the LGBTQIA+ community and the underground ballroom scene.
But it was not enough to secure their place in the competition.
She made an emotional exit, but stated that she had no regrets about their performance or her time on the show.
Michelle later shut down rumours that she had “stormed off” after being voted out, clarifying that she was sad but didn’t leave in anger.
She felt that their participation achieved her goal of highlighting an underrepresented group and sparked important conversations.
Michelle stated: “Sometimes in life things matter more than winning,” and that highlighting queer culture was as important as lifting the Glitterball trophy.
