German police are reportedly praying for a breakthrough as they commence a new search in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann following a tip-off

German police are reportedly ‘praying for a breakthrough’ in the Madeleine McCann case as they embark on a new search following fresh information.
Madeleine, who was just three years old at the time, disappeared in 2007 while holidaying with her family in Praia da Luz, Portugal. Her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, had left her sleeping in their holiday apartment with her toddler twin siblings while they dined with friends nearby.
Upon their return, they found Madeleine missing. For nearly two decades, they have relentlessly campaigned to find their daughter and uncover the truth about what transpired on that tragic night of May 3, 2007.
The Metropolitan Police has so far spent over €15 million on the investigation, known as Operation Grange.
New details have allegedly emerged following the trial of Christian Brueckner, identified by German prosecutors as the main suspect in Madeleine’s disappearance. Brueckner, currently serving a seven-year prison sentence in Germany for raping an elderly woman in Praia da Luz in 2005, has denied any involvement, reports the Mirror.
Portuguese police have sealed off tracks in the vicinity where searches are believed to be ongoing, with tents pitched in Atalaia close to where suspect Brueckner once resided. The Sun reports that the latest search efforts will deploy ground-penetrating radar to scrutinise beneath the surface, concentrating on trenches allegedly excavated when the young girl vanished.
A source involved in the investigation disclosed to The Sun: “Following Brueckner’s trial last year, someone contacted them with theories on where anyone who took Madeleine might’ve dumped her. They told cops about trenches that were dug in Praia at the time Madeleine disappeared, and the house where Brueckner had lived on the edge of the village.
“Of course, all of these places have been searched over and over again, but now they have a new weapon in their ground-scanning radar. It means they don’t need to dig for the sake of it. But as soon as they spot anything of interest they are ready to excavate and check it.”
The informant also mentioned: “With time running out they are praying they get a breakthrough.”
This renewed probe is set to involve approximately 30 German officers, including forensic specialists, in a thorough quest for any sign of Maddie.

German authorities said they are receiving support from Portuguese law enforcement, while the Portuguese police said that searches will be carried out between June 2 and 6 in the municipality of Lagos, in accordance with a European investigation order. A Met Police spokeswoman commented on the matter: “We are aware of the searches being carried by the BKA (German federal police) in Portugal as part of their investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.
“The Metropolitan Police Service is not present at the search, we will support our international colleagues where necessary.”
The German authorities, driven by what they believe may be the key tip-off in the case, feel it’s a now or never moment to uncover decisive forensic evidence. An official involved stated: “German cops know it is now or never so they need to push ahead with every credible tip they have.”
In a 2023 search operation, German forces focused their attention around the Arade reservoir near Praia da Luz, a significant distance from where Madeleine went missing. Suspect Brueckner, who frequented the area from 2000 to 2017, was known to take photographs and videos by the waterbody.
This reservoir had been probed previously back in 2008 when Portuguese lawyer Marcos Aragao Correia, acting on intel supposedly from criminals, funded divers to investigate its depths in connection with Madeleine’s disappearance.
Later in 2014, UK police were granted permission to search scrubland close to where Madeleine McCann vanished. The main suspect, Brueckner, a man with over a dozen prior convictions including an 18-month sentence for a sex attack as a teenager in Germany, remains uncharged regarding the McCann mystery.
Despite his litany of previous offences, last October saw Brueckner acquitted of various sexual crimes in Portugal between 2000 and 2017, not connected to the McCann incident. These allegations included assaulting an Irish tour representative, raping a teenage girl, and attacking an elderly woman in her vacation flat.
Furthermore, he was accused of indecent exposure to a German child on Salema beach.
The McCann family commemorated 18 years since Madeleine’s disappearance last month, referring to her as “beautiful and unique” and reaffirming their resolve to continue the search ahead of what would have been her 22nd birthday.
Her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, along with their family, issued a statement saying: “The years appear to be passing even more quickly and whilst we have no significant news to share, our determination to ‘leave no stone unturned’ is unwavering. We will do our utmost to achieve this.”
April saw the UK government green-light an additional €120,000 funding boost for Scotland Yard detectives dedicated to solving the mystery of Madeleine’s disappearance.
