Osteosarcoma typically develops in the arms or legs and is treated with a combination of surgery and chemotherapy, with amputation sometimes necessary in more advanced cases.
Ms Tom did not share specifics about her daughter’s prognosis.
Acknowledging the difficult path that lies ahead, Ms Tom wrote: “We have a long journey ahead of us.
“I am reminded of the Fred Rogers quote, ‘When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping’,” she shared.
Ms Tom also expressed her thanks to those who have supported her family during this period.
“I’d like to thank our friends and family, and the incredible doctors and nurses at Cedars-Sinai for their ongoing boundless support, love, and care,” she wrote.
“It is truly humbling to see how willing people are to reach out and help.”
