A close friend of the Royal Family has argued that removing Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor from the line of succession is pointless.

Following Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s highly publicised arrest, the shamed royal’s place line of succession is now being questioned. The 66-year-old was stripped of his titles in October 2025 due to his ties to billionaire sex convict Jeffrey Epstein, but remains eighth in line to the throne. Now the Royal Family is facing pressure to remove him from the line of succession after the former Duke of York was placed in custody for 11 hours for suspicion of misconduct in public office.

Although Andrew has repeatedly and strenuously denied any wrongdoing, his numerous emails to the pedophile and photographic appearances in the Epstein files have led to calls for him to be removed from the line of succession. With the idea now being backed by Australia’s Prime minister, Anthony Albanese, it was slammed by Lizzie Cundy, a friend of Andrew’s ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson.

On Monday, the socialite made an appearance on Channel 5’s Storm and Alexis, and pointed out that the chances of Andrew actually sitting on the throne are minuscule and would cost the country too much.

A caller named Lydia from Hertfordshire called into the show, stating: “I 100% agree with Lizzie, 101%.

“I don’t think it’s worth any energy, time, or money because he’s 8th in line to the throne, and he’s never going to get there.”

Removing Andrew from the line of succession would require an Act of Parliament approved by MPs and peers and would come into effect upon royal assent by the King.

It would also require Canada, Jamaica and New Zealand, which are among the Commonwealth countries that would also need to support it.

In his letter to UK leader Keir Starmer expressing his support of the proposal, Mr Albanese penned: “Dear Prime Minister Starmer, in light of recent events concerning Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, I am writing to confirm that my government would agree to any proposal to remove him from the line of royal succession.

“I agree with His Majesty that the law must now take its full course and there must be a full, fair and proper investigation. These are grave allegations and Australians take them seriously.”

Although Buckingham Palace has not publicly commented on the government’s consideration of legislation to remove Andrew from the line of succession, King Charles stated that he was in full support of the police investigation following his younger brother’s arrest.

He stated: “What now follows is the full, fair and proper process by which this issue is investigated in the appropriate manner and by the appropriate authorities.”
