Now, at 45, the Westlife star has finally broken that silence — and the story behind it is far more heartbreaking than anyone imagined.
The post that stopped fans in their tracks
This week, Mark shared his first Instagram update in over twelve months, posting a rare studio photo with headphones wrapped gently around his ears.
“Heya… it’s been so long. I’ve missed ya,” he wrote — apologising for disappearing, admitting how painful it has been watching Westlife launch their glittering 25th anniversary world tour without him.
Watching the party from the sidelines
As the band celebrates three decades of sold-out shows, Mark is still standing on the outside.
He described the ache of seeing his bandmates soaring across the world while he stays home — but also how deeply moved he’s been by fans who’ve refused to forget him.
From Sligo in the late ’90s to stadiums across the globe, Mark reflected on a lifetime spent chasing the same dream with Shane, Nicky and Kian — nights on tour buses, in studios, on planes, in hotel rooms — a brotherhood that “still blows my mind.”
The painful truth
And then came the words fans weren’t ready to hear:
“I’m simply not ready to take on a massive world tour yet. My body and my mind need time.”
After everything he’s survived, Mark knows pushing too hard now could undo years of recovery.
From hospital beds… to radio waves
But instead of retreating into silence again, Mark has chosen a different kind of comeback.
From this week, he’ll host three shows a week on RTÉ Radio 1 in Ireland — every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
“It’s not a stadium show,” he admitted.
“But for me, it’s a huge achievement.”
Sitting in a chair behind a microphone may seem small — but after everything he’s endured, it’s a victory.
The health nightmare no fan saw
Mark’s nightmare began in August 2020 after routine surgery spiralled into sepsis, leaving him in intensive care during the darkest days of the pandemic.
In 2021, just as he tried to return, he was struck again — collapsing before a concert and later diagnosed with pneumonia, forcing him off the Wild Dreams tour.
Then came a devastating blow: a large incisional hernia, requiring yet more major surgery.
Four operations.
Months in ICU.
Years of setbacks.
And still… he kept going.
“We love him. We miss him.”
Even in his absence, Westlife refuse to let his presence fade.
At the Royal Albert Hall anniversary show, Shane Filan stopped mid-concert:
“We love him, we miss him — and we can’t wait to have him back on this stage with us.”
As Flying Without Wings played, singer Kirsten Joy stepped in for Mark’s lines — and the entire arena felt the hole he left behind.
Still part of the dream
Mark may be off the tour, but he hasn’t left the band. He features on new tracks, including Chariot, and Westlife’s upcoming greatest-hits album will include four brand-new songs — proof his voice is still woven into their future.
