Balaclava-clad protesters pelt councillors with eggs while debating âsanctuary for asylum seekersâ

The incident has been branded an âattack on democracyâ
Councillors in Kent were âviolently intimidatedâ and âpelted with eggsâ by protesters wearing balaclavas while holding a debate about asylum seekers.
Swale Borough Council was debating making the area a âDistrict of Sanctuaryâ for asylum seekers in the meeting on Wednesday evening when the alleged attack took place.
Mr McKenna, MP for Sittingbourne and Sheppey, which includes Swale Borough, branded the incident an âattack on democracy itselfâ as he told the House of Commons of his horror at the âviolent scenesâ.
âThey were threatening them, pelting them with eggs and missiles from the gallery.
âThis is an attack on democracy itself. This is an attack on free speech.
âThis is an attack on my constituents.
Kent Police said there had been âno arrests at this stageâ
âThe building was so badly vandalised afterwards, with toilets flooded, lifts destroyed.
âIt canât be used today and is not open.
âMy constituents cannot access council services because of these actions.
âOur democracy is based on the ability to disagree with each other strongly, but never violently.â
The council said it is âworking to get its office back openâ following the incident
Commons speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle branded it âan appalling situationâ, adding: âAn attack on democracy is not acceptable.â
Commons leader Sir Alan Campbell added: âThere are plenty of examples, too many examples, of where MPs are intimidated, but itâs where other local representatives are intimidated too, and itâs simply not acceptable.
âSo let me be very clear: those people, anyone involved in public life, should not be subject to harassment or intimidation for doing their job, and this House needs to stand united in sending out that message.â
Kent Police confirmed there had been no arrests made âat this stageâ.
A force spokesman said: âKent Police attended a reported disturbance during a public meeting at council offices in East Street, Sittingbourne, on the evening of Wednesday, December 10.
âOfficers liaised with council officials at the premises at the end of the meeting and later received reports of criminal damage and a common assault.
âThere have been no arrests at this stage and an investigation is underway into the circumstances.â
Swale Borough Council was forced to close its offices following the incident.
âToilets were vandalised, deliberate flooding caused water to pour through the ceiling in several areas, and a lift was also damaged.
âThe police are examining the CCTV footage, and we will be supportive of any prosecutions they pursue.â
Police have urged anyone with information to get in touch.
