Man, 28, dies in police custody as he’s raced to hospital after arrest

A man has died after he was arrested by Devon and Cornwall Police in Torquay on January 15 – police said a ‘mandatory referral’ to the Independent Office for Police Conduct had been made

Police have confirmed the death of a 28-year-old man in custody earlier this month.

The man was arrested by Devon and Cornwall Police in Torquay on January 15. Police said he “became unwell” in a cell at Torquay Custody Centre “and was given emergency medical treatment before being taken to Torbay District Hospital by ambulance”.

He was later pronounced dead. Police said the man’s next of kin has been informed and the force has made a “mandatory referral” to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) following the death.

Police said in a statement: “Devon & Cornwall Police has made a referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) following the death of a 28-year-old man in Torquay on Thursday 15 January.

“The man was arrested in Torquay in the early hours of 15 January and was taken to Torquay Custody Centre. He became unwell while in a custody cell and was given emergency medical treatment before being taken to Torbay District Hospital by ambulance. Sadly, he was later pronounced deceased.

“The man’s next-of-kin have been informed. The Force made a mandatory referral and is co-operating fully with an independent IOPC investigation.”
