A recent drama with one of Downton Abbey’s most recognisable stars has landed on Netflix – and it has certainly divided opinion. Captivated, also known by the title Too Good To Be True, is a twisty thriller from 2024 and it currently has a 5.6/10 rating on IMDb.

The synopsis reads: “Rachel, a single mother and cleaner, is offered a better job by a wealthy businessman. She accepts, but grows suspicious of his motives as she becomes more involved in his affairs.”

Captivated stars Allen Leech, best known for his role as Tom Branson in Downton Abbey, as Elliott Fielding, while EastEnders icon Kara Tointon plays Rachel Connor.

Despite airing on Channel 5 last year, the series is now getting more attention after being added to Netflix UK, currently sitting in third place on the streaming giant’s Top 10 chart.

While the show has clearly been a hit with some viewers, many have previously taken to IMDb to warn others “not to waste their time” on the thriller.

“An utter waste of time,” one person wrote. “Just finished this series, of which all 4 episodes can be seen on My5. It gets steadily worse with each episode with a paper thin and entirely predictable plot.”

“Don’t waste your time like I did,” another warned. “I kept thinking it would get better. It absolutely does not.”

“Predictable and unconvincing,” a third person complained, describing it as “a disappointing crime miniseries”.

One more person added: “As usual with this type of drama, this started off OK and went downhill rapidly. It is very predictable and some of it makes no sense at all.”

Downton Abbey still

However, some fans had a more positive take on the show, with one calling it “strangely entertaining”.

“I’ve read some scathing reviews about this show, and whilst I don’t think it’s great, I still think it’s watchable,” another person reasoned.

“Not as bad as ratings suggest” a third person argued, saying: “This is a little predictable but is easy to watch and does have a storyline.”

One more person added: “Despite the low rating and some negative reviews it’s surprisingly good. So don’t be fooled.

“The first episode was good just persevere with it as the series does get better. It’s little predictable but a good watch ! Too Good To Be true is intense and thrilling to watch!!”

Viewers who want to make up their own minds about the drama can watch Captivated on Netflix and Channel 5 in the UK or BritBox in the US.
