What began innocuously enough rapidly became antagonistic as officers informed Kate they no longer believed her account and would be designating her an “arguida” (formal suspect).

Investigators told the mother-of-three they possessed evidence that would demonstrate her involvement in her little girl’s disappearance and that unless she confessed she would be charged with murder.

Suspect: Kate McCann (wt) centres on an extraordinary and tense 48-hour window that threatened to derail the search for little Maddie, leaving the McCanns battling for their freedom. It’s every parent’s worst nightmare, somehow deteriorating further, reports the Daily Record.

The 90-minute drama draws from official police documentation, evidential material and recorded testimony, examining the period when questionable evidence against the McCanns was leaked to journalists, transforming the international media coverage and establishing a misleading narrative on social media that endures to this day.

Killing Eve actress Laura Bayston assumes the lead role as Kate McCann, delivering a raw and visceral portrayal of a mother who must preserve her belief that her daughter will be recovered despite immense obstacles. It marks the debut instalment in a limited series that will illuminate crucial turning points in prominent criminal cases, at the precise moment when victims find themselves becoming the main suspects.

Commissioning Editor 5, Dan Louw remarked: “This fantastic film goes where the cameras couldn’t – behind the closed doors of the interview room – to create a deeply moving drama from documentary evidence.

“Suspect: Kate McCann is one of the most tense, moving and shocking films you will see this year. I cannot praise the writing, directing and acting enough – especially a star-making turn from Laura Bayston as Kate McCann.”

A second production entitled Suspect: The Road Rage Killer (wt) has also been greenlit, exploring the case of Tracie Andrews, who maintained her fiancé had been murdered in a brutal road rage incident.

Yet, following a catastrophic press conference, she discovered herself facing accusations of his murder. Officers re-examined timelines, verified statements, and analysed forensic material and gradually, the woman who arrived at the station as a witness became the focal point of suspicion.

The production documents the collapse of her initial account, the investigative pivot that ensued and the ramifications of that altered focus.

Featuring Emma Rigby as Tracie Andrews, the drama is a compelling psychological crime thriller conveyed through first-hand testimonies, police documentation, archived transcripts and recreated recollections.
