“Please Don’t Worry About Me,” Says As She Breaks Silence With Emotional Health Update Amid Autoimmune Battle
Melanie Sykes has shared a deeply personal and quietly powerful health update, offering reassurance to fans as she continues to battle a debilitating autoimmune condition — and urging supporters to let go of their concern.
The television presenter, 55, took to Instagram this week with a reflective message about healing, faith, and self-care, making it clear that while her journey has been painful, she is choosing calm over fear.
“Life is so good, and I know it because I’m right here, right now,” she wrote. “There is nothing to fear. The more I tune into faith and trust that all is well, the more I know it can only get better.”
‘I’m Healing — And I Don’t Want My Illness To Define Me’
Melanie first spoke publicly about her health struggles in April, revealing she had been diagnosed with alopecia and heart problems brought on by prolonged and extreme stress. In recent weeks, she has spoken with stark honesty about the physical toll — admitting she has been “in so much pain” and is now “two-thirds bald,” with widespread inflammation affecting her body.
Yet despite the seriousness of her condition, her latest update struck a notably grounded and reassuring tone.
“I’m not hiding anything,” she explained. “I’d just rather talk about something else sometimes. I’ve got this down. I’m healing myself.”
Rather than focusing attention on her illness, Melanie gently redirected the conversation back to her followers.
“Please don’t worry about me,” she urged. “If anything, attend to your own spiritual garden — your body, your mind, your creative spirit. I’ve got me. I always have.”
A Year Of Illness — And A Turn Toward Spiritual Healing
In a candid video shared earlier this month, the former presenter appeared wrapped in layers — wearing a jumper, jacket, scarf and hat — as she spoke openly about ongoing symptoms.
“I’m not well, as you know,” she said. “I’ve been ill all year. I have an autoimmune condition. I’m losing my hair. I keep having crazy inflammation all over — and I’m working on healing.”
Melanie revealed she has embraced what she described as a “very, very spiritual existence,” dedicating recent months to meditation, mindfulness and inner recovery.
“I even did a meditation teacher training course,” she shared. “I was too ill to finish the last two days — but I can do the work. Mostly, I’ve been living a very spiritual life.”
Alongside the video, she added a heartfelt note to fans: “It’s been a while I’ve reignited my YouTube channel after a long period of learning, meditating and healing. Remember, I love you always.”
The Stress Behind The Illness
Back in April, Melanie shocked followers by posting an image revealing a bald patch on the side of her head. At the time, she attributed her hair loss to “PTSD, shock, mistreatment and malpractice.”
In a separate YouTube video, she later explained that both her alopecia and irregular heartbeat were linked to prolonged stress — stress she said was triggered by allegations involving former ITV colleague Gino D’Acampo.
The pair co-hosted Let’s Do Lunch with Gino and Mel from 2011 to 2014. Gino has since been accused of inappropriate and intimidating behaviour over a number of years — allegations he has strongly denied.
Recalling the moment the accusations became public, Melanie described the emotional impact as overwhelming.
“I didn’t sleep at all that night,” she said. “It brought everything back. I remember thinking — if I can’t sleep because of this, how must he be feeling?”
She added that despite her own experience, she felt conflicted emotions.
“What has been alleged is heinous,” she said. “He must feel terrible — unless he’s a narcissist. I’m not a psychotherapist. I can only speak from what I experienced.”
Walking Away From Television
Melanie has also spoken candidly about misogyny within the television industry, revealing she stepped away from TV altogether in 2021 following an inappropriate remark made by former MasterChef judge Gregg Wallace.
Since then, she has focused on personal healing, spirituality, and reclaiming her sense of peace away from the spotlight.
‘I Want My Story To Inspire Calm — Not Concern’
Alopecia is an autoimmune condition marked by sudden and often unpredictable hair loss, frequently triggered by stress or trauma. While deeply distressing, it can be managed with treatment, time and supportive care.
As Melanie continues her recovery, her message to fans remains clear and unwavering.
“Don’t worry about me,” she said softly. “I’ve learned how to take care of myself.”
And in a world quick to panic over celebrity illness, her quiet insistence on faith, self-trust and healing may be the most powerful update of all.
