Dame Judi Dench has revealed the most heartbreaking update yet on her deteriorating eyesight — admitting she can no longer recognise her closest friends, more than 13 years after being diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration.

The beloved 90-year-old actress opened up during a moving joint interview with her friend of five decades, Sir Ian McKellen, while the pair promoted a new Shakespeare learning initiative. Fans, who had long wondered why Judi has increasingly avoided on-camera work, were stunned by her candour.
“People think I’m being grand — but I simply can’t see.”
Judi explained that her condition has worsened to the point where she can no longer read, watch television, or clearly see the faces in front of her.

“People think, ‘Oh, get her — she’s gone very grand,’” she said. “But it’s because I can’t see. I can’t see the television, can’t see to read.”
When asked whether she can still see Ian sitting beside her, she replied softly:
“I can see your outline… and I know you so well with your Macbeth scarf. But I can’t recognise anyone.”
Ian responded gently, “We can see you,” bringing a brief smile to Judi’s face — a moment that left viewers deeply moved.
A slow retreat from the spotlight
Her revelation comes after fans noticed her quiet withdrawal from major acting roles. Her last big-screen appearance was in 2022’s Allelujah, and Judi has taken part in fewer interviews over recent years — each hinting at struggles she faced behind closed doors.
Although she is no longer taking on major roles, Judi returned to television this year for a new Christmas advert — one she could film without the demanding visual requirements of theatre or cinema.
Humour and heartbreak in equal measure
Despite the gravity of her condition, Judi’s trademark wit still shines through. When Ian asked if she ever says hello to the wrong person, she laughed:
“Yes — sometimes!”
But the reality remains painful. Judi revealed that during a recent dinner, her partner David Mills had to cut her food because she couldn’t see what was on her plate.
“He would hand something to me on a fork — and that’s how I ate,” she said.
A memory that once never failed her
In recent years, Judi has spoken openly about the growing difficulty of learning scripts. At a Vision Foundation event in 2021, she revealed she now needs friends to repeat lines to her “over and over and over again” because she can no longer visualise words on the page.

“I need to find a machine that teaches me my lines and tells me where they appear,” she joked with Graham Norton — a stark contrast to the days when she could recite entire Shakespeare plays from memory.
Speaking at the Chelsea Flower Show earlier this year, she admitted she currently has no plans for future acting projects, saying bluntly:
“No, no — I can’t even see.”
Still giving back
Despite her limited vision, Judi remains committed to causes she cares about. She recently filmed a heartfelt Christmas advert for ShelterBox, alongside Dame Imelda Staunton, supporting families displaced by disaster. The project allowed her to participate without the strain of heavy visual work.
A legacy untouched by fading sight
Her latest interview is one of the rawest and most honest reflections she has ever given on her condition — a condition she has battled quietly, with dignity, humour, and that unmistakable Judi Dench resilience.
As the world rallies around her, one truth remains clear:
Even as her vision fades, Dame Judi Dench continues to shine — a national treasure navigating unimaginable challenges with grace.
