Savannah Guthrie is “livid” about false reports her brother-in-law could be a suspect in the investigation into her missing mom, according to one of her former NBC colleagues.

Podcaster Ashleigh Banfield wrongly reported Tommaso Cioni, husband of Annie Guthrie and brother-in-law of Savannah, could be a suspect in the kidnapping. Banfield made the claim on a February 3 episode of her show, Drop Dead Serious With Ashleigh Banfield.

Her comments come despite the fact Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has insisted Nancy’s family members have been cleared as possible suspects. It comes after a chilling new theory emerged on how Nancy Guthrie was sickeningly taken from her home.

Megyn Kelly, who used to work at NBC where Savannah’s Today show is filmed, has suggested Nancy’s daughter is furious over the comments about her brother-in-law. “I have not been able to confirm that the Guthrie family wants to sue Ashleigh Banfield, but I have confirmed that Savannah is livid about that report and definitely does not suspect her sister or her brother-in-law,” Kelly said during an episode of SiriusXM’s The Megyn Kelly Show.

During the March 12 broadcast, Kelly continued, “Can you blame her? I mean, of course, she loves her sister, I’m sure she loves her brother-in-law, and I’m sure she genuinely doesn’t believe they had anything to do with it.

“All of us are in a different boat — you know, we have to be more objective in assessing the possible suspects, the possible people connected with it, and law enforcement certainly does.”

The Pima County Sheriff seemed to reference Banfield’s claims about Cioni as he said in a statement issued shortly after, “Nobody’s eliminated, but we just really don’t have enough to say, ‘This is our suspect, this is our guy, we know — or our gal.'”

He added, “We don’t know that. And it’s really kind of reckless to report that someone is a suspect when they could very well be a victim. … To the media, I plead with you to be careful of what it is we put out there, because we don’t have anybody here listed as a suspect, and you could actually be doing some damage to the case — but you can do some damage to that individual, too. Social media is kind of an ugly world sometimes.”

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department later issued a further statement, saying, “The family has been nothing but co-operative and gracious and are victims in this case. To suggest otherwise is not only wrong, it is cruel.”

Nanos told NBC news his office sent out the statement because people had been “attacking the innocent.” He said “kindness matters” and concluded via text, “Every cops duty to stand up and be that voice for our victims.”

In a statement shared to The Hollywood Reporter, however, a producer for Drop Dead Serious With Ashleigh Banfield said the journalist “stands by her reporting.” They also said she is defending her “ironclad source.”

It comes as the mysterious disappearance of an Air Force general has several chilling similarities to the Nancy case.
