The ‘Halal’ Wedding Outrage: Hard-Right MP Rupert Lowe Branded a ‘Traitor’ After Son Marries Daughter of Muslim Academic

Rupert Lowe, the hard-right Member of Parliament for Great Yarmouth and founder of the anti-immigration party ‘Restore Britain’, has found himself at the centre of a massive political storm. The controversy erupted not over his policies, but after his son, Angus Lowe, reportedly married a Muslim woman of Libyan descent last weekend, with the wedding reception allegedly featuring halal food options.
On Sunday, Mr Lowe posted a photograph of the newly-weds on X (formerly Twitter), with the caption: “A young couple setting out on their life adventure. I am a very proud father.” While the MP deliberately omitted the bride’s identity, internet sleuths and legacy media quickly identified her as Yasmin Mezran.
A Clash of Ideologies
The marriage has raised eyebrows across the political spectrum due to Yasmin’s background. She is the daughter of Karim Mezran, a prominent Libyan-Italian academic and senior fellow at the Washington-based Rafik Hariri Centre for the Middle East. Notably, Dr Mezran was formerly the secretary-general of the Association of Italian Muslim Intellectuals and has spent decades advocating for the integration and rights of Muslims in Europe.
Adding fuel to the fire, reports emerged that the wedding reception provided halal dining options for Muslim guests in attendance. Dr Mezran seemingly confirmed the union by reposting a message on X which noted that halal food was served, despite it being official ‘Restore Britain’ policy to ban halal slaughter in the UK.
‘Hypocrite’ vs ‘Traitor’
The revelation has triggered a wave of mockery from Mr Lowe’s political opponents, who have wasted no time in branding him a hypocrite. For years, the former Reform UK politician has built his brand on fierce anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant rhetoric. His party, Restore Britain—which split from Nigel Farage’s Reform UK in 2025 and enjoys backing from far-right figures like Tommy Robinson and tech billionaire Elon Musk—explicitly campaigns to reverse the “Islamisation of Britain”, enforce mass deportations, and outlaw halal and kosher meat.
However, the harshest backlash has come from Mr Lowe’s own supporters and ethnonationalist accounts on social media. Far-right users expressed deep feelings of betrayal, with some going as far as to brand the MP a “traitor” to his own nationalist cause.
With Restore Britain attempting to position itself as a decisive force in upcoming votes, this family affair has turned into a major political headache, proving that even the most hardline anti-immigration rhetoric can falter when it meets reality at the family dinner table.
