The View fans slam Whoopi Goldberg for Met Gala defense

During the Tuesday, May 5 episode of The View, Whoopi Goldberg was seen defending people for going to the Met Gala instead of boycotting due to Jeff Bezos’ involvement.

The gala, which was held on May 4, saw the Amazon founder and his wife, Lauren Sanchez, serve as honorary co-chairs of the event. The move caused intense outrage, including boycotting from celebrities and protesting from Amazon workers and beyond.

During The View’s Hot Topics session, Goldberg shared her opinion on the matter with her fellow panelists and their viewers. The discussion came after chaos broke out during the event following one protester charging at security. It comes after Trump was caught on camera performing a shocking act on Melania at an inappropriate moment.

Goldberg began, “People protest at the Oscars, people protest at the Grammys, people protest at the Met Gala. People protest because, yes, terrible things are happening in their country.

“And wonderful things are happening at the same time. Two things can be true at the same time. And it doesn’t mean that you don’t care that people are going hungry. Because a lot of those people do stuff for free. They go, and they give their time, they give their money. You don’t always know it’s them, but they’re doing it.”

She continued, “So, I’m not mad at anybody who gets an opportunity to go and show their behind off and have a good night. In this world of so much BS, go have a good time. Go get your Oscar, go be glamorous, put on too much lipstick, too many eyelashes. Go do it! If that’s what you wanna do, go do it.

“And, aside from the controversy, I’m like you, I like my Amazon. I want him to pay his people. I want him to make the company better because they’re slipping…so I want him to pay the company’s taxes. That’s what I want,” she finished.

While Joy Behar and other co-hosts agreed with Goldberg, several people in the comments were not pleased with her take on the matter.

One person said, “I’m so disappointed with her take on this one. She’s defending Bezos under the guise of it being a huge fundraiser for the arts possibly but they could have donated every dollar they spent there directly to the arts if they cared so much about them and still had enough money to dress up the way they would’ve for this night any other time because they have the money to do so.”

“They are in your tax bracket, socialize in your same circles, and you all enjoy privileges the rest of us don’t. Don’t tell the majority of Americans how to feel,” another person said. A third wrote, “Nope. She’s wrong. She’s just sticking up for her friends and justifying why she had gone before. Only thing she said that was legit was “tax them”.”

“I’m sorry. I understand wanting your Oscar or Grammy or AMA. Whatever. They WORKED hard in their craft for that. But the MET Gala is just a night of schmoozing,” someone else voiced.

A fourth chimed in, “NOPE NOPE NOPE AND NOPE!!! Can’t canoodle with fascists and then speak out about it!!! Those two things can’t be true at the same time. Respectfully.” “Sorry anyone who went I no longer care to support! Americans are over it! READ THE ROOM!” a final viewer wrote.

The night was surrounded by controversy weeks ahead of its arrival, after the boycotts began following the news of Bezos’ involvement.

Bezos and his bride allegedly paid the Met $10 million to earn their spot on the committee for this year’s gala.

Activist group Everybody Hates Elon was at the center of the protests, leading the way in dropping over 300 water bottles of fake urine off at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The move was meant to symbolize solidarity with Amazon workers who allegedly have to go to the bathroom in water bottles due to lack of bathroom breaks.
