The latest series of Silent Witness has done something few long-running dramas manage this late in the game: itâs split its audience right down the middle.
Series 29, which opened with the two-part story The Enemy Within, has left some loyal viewers threatening to âgive upâ on the BBC crime drama altogether â while others are hailing it as one of the showâs most unsettling and relevant chapters yet.

âThis Isnât the Show I Fell in Love Withâ
Monday nightâs episode tackled the aftermath of a fatal stabbing in Birmingham, initially framed as a racially motivated attack. A chilling online video warning that a victim was a âracist pigâ â and claiming âthe end of white peopleâ was coming â set an explosive tone from the start.
But as long-time fans quickly pointed out, the controversy wasnât just in the storyline â it was in how the story was told.

Across social media and Reddit, frustration poured in.
âIâve finished both episodes⊠and they were not Silent Witness,â one viewer wrote.
âItâs lost what made it special. It used to be about bodies, evidence, forensics. Now Jack and Nikki are running around like police officers.â
Another viewer complained that the showâs trademark realism is slipping:
âI was disappointed to see Jack chasing a suspect straight past two patrol cars. What were uniform doing â having a tea break? The shine is fading.â
Is Jack the Problem?
Much of the criticism has centred on Jack Hodgson â and his relationship with Nikki Alexander.
âI thought I was the only one who didnât like Jack or his relationship with Nikki,â one fan admitted.
âThereâs just no romantic chemistry. Nothing there.â

Others took issue with the showâs broader evolution â including the move away from London, the Birmingham setting, and the introduction of newer characters.
âGave up about 15 minutes in,â one viewer confessed.
âItâs just not the same anymore. I think Iâm done.â
Another added bluntly:
âStopped watching. Such a shame â it used to be one of my favourite programmes.â
But Not Everyone Is Switching Off
Yet while some fans are turning away, others say Silent Witness has never felt more relevant.
In Part 2, a major twist revealed that the inflammatory video was a deepfake, created using AI that harvested real images and distorted them into something âunsophisticated, but convincing.â
And for many viewers, that reveal hit hard.
âIâve watched both episodes and think itâs the best Silent Witness Iâve seen,â one fan wrote. âAI is terrifying.â
âSo disturbing and uncomfortable â but superbly done,â another added.
Others praised the storyline as a timely warning, calling it âdeeply unsettlingâ and âa reminder of how dangerous AI manipulation can be.â
A Show at a Crossroads
After nearly three decades on air, Silent Witness now finds itself at a crossroads:
Stick to its forensic roots â or evolve with the times, even if it risks alienating its most devoted fans.
For some, Series 29 proves the show has lost its soul.
For others, it shows exactly why it still matters.
One thing is certain: Silent Witness isnât being ignored â and for a 29-year-old drama, that might be the most telling verdict of all.
