Zara McDermott and Louis Tomlinson never planned to make headlines with their romance.
After months of keeping things quiet through low-key dates, they chose Glastonbury as the moment to gently reveal they were together. It was meant to be a simple, happy step forward. Instead, it opened the floodgates to a wave of online hate that left fans stunned.
While Louis looked more relaxed than he has in years, trolls targeted Zara almost immediately. The flashpoint was her Adidas tracksuit – worn casually while spending time with Louis and his friends at the festival. For some One Direction loyalists, the outfit became ammunition for cruel accusations that she had “changed” herself for him.
The reality was far more human.
Just six months earlier, Zara had ended her relationship with Made In Chelsea star Sam Thompson. Now 29, she had naturally drifted away from the “posh girl” dresses that once defined her public image. Her new style felt freer, more relaxed, more her.Supporters were quick to defend her. One fan wrote that she looked amazing and told the bullies to grow up, reminding them that no one gets a say in who Louis chooses to love. Others praised the way she seemed comfortable in her own skin, insisting she didn’t owe anyone a specific look.
Despite the noise, Zara and Louis only grew closer.
They first began dating in March and are now preparing to celebrate their first Christmas together at Louis’s Hertfordshire home. The gathering is set to include his young son Freddie, sisters Lottie, Phoebe and Daisy, and the wider family.
On their podcast Tea With The Twins, Phoebe and Daisy hinted at just how big the occasion will be. With Lottie’s baby Flossy joining the clan this year and their brother bringing along a new girlfriend, the festive guest list is expected to reach around sixteen.
Behind the scenes, friends say Zara has been spending nearly all her time at Louis’s place, even filming her social media content from there. After returning to her parents’ home following her previous breakup, being with Louis simply made more sense. The distance between their homes is significant, and the couple are said to be firmly in the honeymoon phase, wanting to be together whenever work allows.
She spent much of the summer travelling with him and now, back in the UK, his home has quietly become her base.
For a relationship that began in whispers and secret dates, Zara and Louis are now stepping into something far more real. And while the trolls continue to shout, the people who matter can see what the couple already know – they’re not changing for each other. They’re just finally comfortable being themselves.
