đŸ”„SILENT WITNESS FANS THREATEN TO QUIT AS SERIES 29 IGNITES OUTRAGE OVER AI TWIST CQ🚹

The latest series of Silent Witness has done something few long-running dramas manage this late in the game: it’s split its audience right down the middle.

Series 29, which opened with the two-part story The Enemy Within, has left some loyal viewers threatening to “give up” on the BBC crime drama altogether — while others are hailing it as one of the show’s most unsettling and relevant chapters yet.

“This Isn’t the Show I Fell in Love With”

Monday night’s episode tackled the aftermath of a fatal stabbing in Birmingham, initially framed as a racially motivated attack. A chilling online video warning that a victim was a “racist pig” — and claiming “the end of white people” was coming — set an explosive tone from the start.

But as long-time fans quickly pointed out, the controversy wasn’t just in the storyline — it was in how the story was told.Nikki holding flowers next to Jack in Silent WitnessIs Jack the problem? (Credit: BBC)

Across social media and Reddit, frustration poured in.

“I’ve finished both episodes
and they were not Silent Witness,” one viewer wrote.
“It’s lost what made it special. It used to be about bodies, evidence, forensics. Now Jack and Nikki are running around like police officers.”

Another viewer complained that the show’s trademark realism is slipping:
“I was disappointed to see Jack chasing a suspect straight past two patrol cars. What were uniform doing — having a tea break? The shine is fading.”

Is Jack the Problem?

Much of the criticism has centred on Jack Hodgson — and his relationship with Nikki Alexander.

“I thought I was the only one who didn’t like Jack or his relationship with Nikki,” one fan admitted.

Others took issue with the show’s broader evolution — including the move away from London, the Birmingham setting, and the introduction of newer characters.

“Gave up about 15 minutes in,” one viewer confessed.
“It’s just not the same anymore. I think I’m done.”

Another added bluntly:
“Stopped watching. Such a shame — it used to be one of my favourite programmes.”

But Not Everyone Is Switching Off

Yet while some fans are turning away, others say Silent Witness has never felt more relevant.

In Part 2, a major twist revealed that the inflammatory video was a deepfake, created using AI that harvested real images and distorted them into something “unsophisticated, but convincing.”

And for many viewers, that reveal hit hard.

“I’ve watched both episodes and think it’s the best Silent Witness I’ve seen,” one fan wrote. “AI is terrifying.”

“So disturbing and uncomfortable — but superbly done,” another added.

Others praised the storyline as a timely warning, calling it “deeply unsettling” and “a reminder of how dangerous AI manipulation can be.”

A Show at a Crossroads

After nearly three decades on air, Silent Witness now finds itself at a crossroads:
Stick to its forensic roots — or evolve with the times, even if it risks alienating its most devoted fans.

For some, Series 29 proves the show has lost its soul.
For others, it shows exactly why it still matters.

One thing is certain: Silent Witness isn’t being ignored — and for a 29-year-old drama, that might be the most telling verdict of all.
