Lorraine Kelly has shared an emotional and deeply personal goodbye to her father, John Kelly, as she laid him to rest following his sudden death — a loss that has quietly shaken both her family and the viewers who see her every morning on ITV.
The much-loved presenter, 66, stepped away from her show earlier this year after confirming that her dad had died following a tragic accident during icy winter conditions in Scotland. John, 84, is understood to have slipped while walking along a frozen path in East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire. Despite the swift response of emergency services, he could not be saved.
A farewell filled with love, not noise
Lorraine attended her father’s funeral on Friday — a day she later described as painfully difficult, yet softened by memories of a life well lived.
Sharing a photograph of the order of service on Instagram, she offered fans a rare glimpse into a moment usually kept private. The booklet bore the words “Celebrating the life of John Petrie Kelly”, alongside a touching black-and-white image of her father as a young man, smartly dressed in a wedding suit.
The service, held at South Lanarkshire Crematorium, was intentionally understated — reflecting John’s quiet character and the passions that shaped him.
“We remembered everything he loved”
In a heartfelt message to her followers, Lorraine wrote:
“We said goodbye to my dad on Friday. Thank you to everyone who came to celebrate his life.”
She explained that the ceremony focused not on loss alone, but on the interests that brought her father joy throughout his life.
“It was a simple, heartfelt service where we remembered his love of astronomy, exploration, science and Star Trek.”
She closed with words that captured the emotional weight of the day:
“A tough day full of sadness — but also good memories.”
