Barbara Knox has long been regarded as one of Coronation Street’s most loved stars, but a sweet behind-the-scenes story shows that even soap legends can have their own heroes.
The actress, best known to viewers as Rita Tanner, has been part of the ITV soap for more than five decades. Over that time, she has become a familiar and cherished figure to generations of Corrie fans.
Former Coronation Street star Sally Lindsay recently looked back on a touching moment involving Barbara during an appearance on the Once Upon a Time podcast.
Sally joined the soap in 2001 as Shelley Unwin, but one of her earliest scenes proved more emotional than she expected. She recalled having to deliver a simple line to Barbara’s character, Rita, only to suddenly find herself unable to speak.
For Sally, who had grown up in the North of England with Coronation Street as part of everyday family life, standing on the famous set opposite Barbara felt overwhelming.
After freezing during the scene, Sally apologised and admitted she was struggling to take in the moment.
Rather than making her feel uncomfortable, Barbara responded with warmth. She gently reassured Sally and revealed that she had once felt the same way when working with Doris Speed.
Doris played Annie Walker, one of Coronation Street’s original greats and the unforgettable landlady of the Rovers Return. With her sharp presence, elegance and authority, Annie became one of the soap’s most memorable characters before leaving the show in the early 1980s.
Barbara’s confession gave Sally a comforting reminder that nerves are part of the journey, even for performers who later become icons themselves.
The story offers a charming glimpse into Coronation Street’s long history and the way each generation of cast members has been inspired by the one before it.
For fans, it is a lovely reminder that behind the familiar faces and famous characters, there are real people who still remember the moments that shaped them.
