No more “Come on Eileen” puns – the beloved Coronation Street veteran has officially left the cobbles.

In tonight’s emotional episode (Friday, June 6), Eileen Grimshaw said her goodbyes and headed for a new life in Thailand. After 25 years of ups and downs on Britain’s most iconic street, she hopped into a taxi with her son Jason, off to help him run a bar overseas.
So, what’s next for the actress behind Eileen – Sue Cleaver?

During a candid chat on Loose Women earlier this year, Sue revealed she’s stepping boldly into the unknown: “This is my decade,” she said. “I’m more excited about this decade than any other – hopefully, as long as I stay well, it’s going to be the most exciting one yet.”
And it seems she’s wasting no time. In December, Sue is set to take to the stage – swapping soap opera for pantomime. She’ll appear as the delightfully zany Mrs Potty in Beauty and the Beast at Hull New Theatre, alongside comedy legend Paul Chuckle.
But could Eileen ever make a return to Weatherfield? The door’s been left wide open.
Speaking to The Mirror, Sue explained: “There was always the risk that they might have killed me off, but they were so supportive. They told me Eileen’s a big part of the show and asked what kind of exit I wanted. I didn’t want to close the door – I love the place. I said, ‘Give me a happy ending.’”
And Eileen certainly got one. With the threat of prison over Julie’s death no longer hanging over her, she was finally free to live her life – and take that long-overdue trip to Thailand.
George, however, wasn’t on board with the plan. He believed their relationship had run its course and told Eileen he wasn’t joining her. She agreed – saying she loved him, but only as a friend. George thanked her for her honesty and said he’d stay behind in Weatherfield.
With that, Eileen packed up her life, said heartfelt goodbyes to her neighbours, and made her son Todd promise to visit. Then she and Jason drove off toward the airport – and a brand new chapter.
What lies ahead for Sue Cleaver now? Only time will tell… but one thing’s certain: Eileen’s legacy on the cobbles won’t be forgotten.
