Monty Don previously revealed that he got some backlash after sparking speculation he was quitting Gardenersâ World.
Since his first appearance on TV screens back in 1989, Monty has become one of Britainâs favourite horticulturists. Not only has he been presenting Gardenersâ World since 2003, but heâs also had a ton of other TV shows.
However, back in 2023, he hinted at his departure from the show as he approaches his seventies â and even dubbed the series a âremorseless treadmillâ.
A few months later, Monty appeared to be regretting his comments as hit back at the âstickâ he got for his comments. He also revealed his future on the BBC show, which airs a repeat episode Thursday (April 30) at 8am.

Monty Don on plans to leave Gardenersâ World
Back in November 2023, Monty opened up about when he plans to leave the popular gardening show.
Aside from his telly work, heâs a mega-successful author too, having released and published more than 25 books. And, speaking to Radio Times, he admitted that he doesnât want to âgive up writingâ. So Monty commented that the logical thing to do would be to exit Gardenersâ World.
âI think I have to give something up. Iâm not prepared to give up writing and I really enjoy the travel stuff I do. So therefore the logical thing to give up is Gardenersâ World, which is, for all its virtues, a remorseless treadmill,â he stated.

Monty Don âcanât go on foreverâ
But fast forward to February 2024, and Monty was forced to clarify what exactly he meant and the circumstances that led to the statement.
I said that at the end of a very long year and I was exhausted.
Speaking to The Telegraph, he noted how heâd âhappilyâ do another few more years on the show â but pointed out how he âcanât go on foreverâ.
âI got a bit of stick for that,â he admitted. Monty then explained: âI said that at the end of a very long year and I was exhausted. I canât go on forever.
âBut Iâd be very happy to do another five years. If the BBC renew my contract, Iâd happily take it.â
Monty Donâs replacement should represent âdiversityâ
Monty, who is now 70, previously revealed who heâd like to replace him. Talking to The Sun, he said: âI would like to think the next Gardenersâ World presenter ideally would be female.
âThey would represent either singly, or in multiplicity, the diversity in this country, that has at least some urban context. So I think all that leads to it not being just one garden any more, because if it is one garden, itâs got to be a big one.â
