Florence’s family have shared an emotional update as the young girl prepares to spend her 10th birthday in hospital following another setback in her recovery.
While many children mark double digits with parties, presents and time with friends, Florence’s milestone birthday will look very different. Her family explained that planned medical procedures have had to be delayed again after doctors found her neutrophil levels had dropped further.
Neutrophils are white blood cells that help the body fight infection. When levels are very low, doctors must take extra care, as even minor illnesses can become serious. Because of this, Florence remains under strict protection while her medical team waits for the results they need.
The delay has also brought more discomfort. Florence has developed a painful mouth ulcer and swelling in her cheek, adding to what has already been an extremely difficult period.
Her family say the physical side is hard, but the isolation has been especially upsetting. Florence cannot safely mix with others while she remains neutropenic, meaning normal childhood moments — days out, birthday plans and time away from hospital life — have had to wait.
The timing has made things even more emotional. Her postponed procedures have now been scheduled for her actual birthday, meaning she will not yet be able to ring the hospital bell, a moment her family had been hoping would mark the end of this stage of treatment.
Florence’s mother admitted she had imagined the day very differently. She had hoped her daughter’s first double-digit birthday would be free from hospital corridors and medical routines, especially after years of health challenges.
Even so, the family are determined not to let the date pass without love. They plan to decorate her hospital room, sing, bring cake and make the day feel as special as possible.
They also continue to hold deep gratitude for Florence’s donor family, whose decision gave her the chance to reach more birthdays, share more hugs and create more memories with the people who love her.
For now, Florence’s family are taking things one day at a time. They say this latest setback is another delay, not the end of the journey. Their hope remains that brighter days are ahead — and that one day soon, Florence will finally get to ring that bell.
