He may have once felt out of place because of his striking red hair and a childhood plagued by teasing—but few could have predicted the transformation that turned Mick Hucknall into one of the most surprising heartthrobs of the ’90s.

The Simply Red frontman has been romantically linked with a string of stunning women—among them were Catherine Zeta-Jones in 1998, Ulrika Jonsson, Helena Christensen, Melanie Sykes, Lady Victoria Hervey, and tennis legend Steffi Graf.

His connection with actress Martine McCutcheon made headlines for a rather awkward reason—she once recalled an unfortunate night out that ended in chaos. Mick, however, publicly dismissed her version of events, calling it an “exaggerated tale” that didn’t reflect reality.

Another famous name who nearly entered his romantic history was Brigitte Nielsen. In her memoir, she described a peculiar late-night encounter in Mick’s candlelit bathroom—but claimed nothing beyond a soak in the tub occurred, despite the unexpected ambiance.
Such stories are just a glimpse into Hucknall’s earlier life, which he himself has called “unfiltered.” At the height of his fame, he once said that during the mid-’80s, his popularity brought him nonstop attention. “I never turned it down,” he admitted in a 2010 interview. “It was a whirlwind of excitement, but I do regret hurting a few along the way.”

A documentary released in 2004 only added to the legend, with claims that he had been romantically involved with over 3,000 women. The figure made waves, but Mick later clarified it wasn’t his own claim. “That number came from the editor,” he explained in a later interview, adding that he never counted or tried to.
He also reflected on how such stories tend to get exaggerated because of fame: “It happens in every city on a weekend—but when you’re famous, it becomes a headline.” In 2019, he reaffirmed that comments about his romantic life were often taken out of context. “I didn’t mean it literally,” he said. “People just ran with it.”
Despite all the myths, Hucknall is now a family man, having settled down with wife Gabriella Wesberry—whom he married at Forter Castle in 2005—and their daughter Romy True, now 17.
His past came into the spotlight once more this week with the release of a brand-new concert film celebrating Simply Red’s 40th anniversary. Titled Holding Back The Years: 40 Years of Simply Red – Live from Santiago, the film was shot in Chile and features five sold-out performances in front of over 140,000 fans.
Interestingly, the British Board of Film Classification included a mild content note about brief adult-themed references in some lyrics. Though the movie carries a universal rating, it mentions “short and non-explicit mentions of intimacy and attraction,” along with light language and glimpses of on-stage drinks.
Still, the show is a powerful reminder of the band’s lasting impact. Spanning four decades of music—from their acclaimed 1985 debut Picture Book to recent releases—the film gives fans a front-row seat to the band’s signature energy and soulful performances.
As the world reflects on his rollercoaster past, Mick Hucknall’s latest project proves that while his reputation may have raised eyebrows, his music continues to captivate.
