The Mummy franchise is being resurrected!

In November 2025, several outlets confirmed that The Mummy 4 is officially in the works, with filmmakers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett at the helm.

It’s been nearly three decades since The Mummy premiered in 1999 — and made an unexpected splash at the box office, raking in more than $409 million globally, per Box Office Mojo. The story follows daring adventurer Rick O’Connell (Brendan Fraser) and brilliant Egyptologist Evelyn Carnahan (Rachel Weisz) as they uncover the lost city of Hamunaptra. However, their expedition goes awry when they awaken Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), a cursed high priest who was buried alive.

“I loved being part of a movie that we didn’t know if it was an action, comedy, horror, adventure [or] romance. I think it had so much appeal because everybody wanted a little bit of all of those things,” Fraser told Popverse in November 2022. “And by whatever movie magic, it came together for us.”

The Mummy was followed by The Mummy Returns (2001), which brought in an impressive $443 million worldwide, per Box Office Mojo. Fraser returned for a third film, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008); however, Weisz stepped away from the franchise due to scheduling conflicts, per Looper.

What will The Mummy 4 be about? 

No official plot details have been revealed for The Mummy 4. However, the third installment suggested to fans that Rick and Evelyn O’Connell’s next expedition could lead them deep into Peru.

At the end of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Rick and Evelyn (Maria Bello), along with their son Alex (Luke Ford) and his love interest Lin (Isabella Leong), face off against Emperor Han — an ancient Chinese warlord who’s been resurrected with terrifying powers.

In a climactic battle at the Great Wall of China, the Emperor transforms into a three-headed dragon and unleashes an undead army. Thanks to Lin’s immortal mother, Zi Yuan (Michelle Yeoh), and a magical dagger that strips the Emperor of his immortality, Rick and Alex defeat him.

With the curse finally broken, Zi Yuan sacrifices her immortality so that Lin can live a normal life. The O’Connells decide to finally retire — though the film teases another adventure ahead, hinting that mummies have been discovered in Peru.

Who is in the cast of The Mummy 4? 

Fraser and Weisz are reportedly in talks to reprise their iconic roles as Rick and Evelyn O’Connell — and it probably won’t take much convincing to get them back on board.

When GQ asked The Whale star in November 2022 about returning to the franchise, his answer came without hesitation. “Absolutely … that was great fun,” he said.

Weisz echoed Fraser’s enthusiasm in an April 2023 interview with Net-a-Porter.

“It’s beloved to me too,” she told the outlet. “Everybody in The Mummy was just brilliant, and it was just some alchemical thing in it, that it had charm, and charm is such a strange thing. It’s either there or it isn’t.”

Who is directing The Mummy 4? 

The Mummy 4 will be directed by Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett, according to Variety.

Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett are two-thirds of the filmmaking collective Radio Silence, along with producer Chad Villella. They are best known for their work on horror films such as Ready or Not (2019), Scream (2022) and Scream VI (2023).

David Coggeshall — who is known for films like Prey (2019) and The Family Plan (2023) — has confirmed that he will write the screenplay.

“Cat’s out of the bag, I guess,” he wrote on X in response to a Deadline article in November 2025.
