Hayden Panettiere has recently opened up about the deeply emotional and difficult decision she made to relinquish custody of her daughter, Kaya, back in 2018. The 36-year-old actress shared that at the time, she was grappling with personal battles, including addiction and severe postpartum depression, which led to her making the heartbreaking choice.
Kaya, now 11, currently resides in Europe with Panettiere’s ex-fiancé, Wladimir Klitschko, the former professional boxer. Meanwhile, Panettiere lives in the United States. Despite the physical distance between them, Panettiere emphasized that her relationship with her daughter remains strong, and she continues to be an active presence in Kaya’s life.
Speaking on the “On Purpose with Jay Shetty” podcast, Panettiere opened up about her mental health struggles and how they led to her decision to seek help. She explained that the idea of simply “giving away” her daughter was incomprehensible to her and something that broke her heart. Panettiere stressed that at the time, she was feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, depression, and the challenges of motherhood. Her struggles were compounded by the fact that she was trying to continue working in the public eye, which made her feel as though she was losing herself.
In her candid conversation, she clarified a common misconception—that she had been forced into treatment. Instead, Panettiere revealed that she had been the one who sought help, desperate for a way to escape the darkness she felt. She shared that she realized she could no longer live the way she was, and it was this realization that led her to make the difficult decision to sign over custody of Kaya to Klitschko, believing it was the best option for her daughter’s well-being at the time.

However, despite the pain of that decision, Panettiere remains in close contact with Kaya. She explained that the two share an incredible bond, spending time together on FaceTime and having deep, meaningful conversations. “I have an incredible relationship with her,” Panettiere said. “I travel as much as I can, I see her. I do spend a lot of time on FaceTime with her. But we talk about really deep things. We have a really intense, incredible bond, and I’m very grateful for that.” She also reassured listeners that Kaya never feels abandoned, pointing out that she has two parents who are committed to ensuring her happiness and well-being, emotionally, physically, and spiritually.
Panettiere also took the opportunity to address her struggles with postpartum depression, a topic that she feels is often misunderstood and stigmatized. She recalled how, as a young girl, she had always dreamed of becoming a mother. She had visions of what kind of mom she would be and how her life would unfold once she had a child. However, after giving birth to Kaya, Panettiere knew something was deeply wrong. She felt disconnected from the mother she had envisioned herself becoming, and the struggles of postpartum depression made it even harder for her to fulfill the role she had dreamed about.
Postpartum depression, according to Panettiere, is a condition that many people don’t fully understand, and it’s often subject to shame and stigma. She shared that after Kaya’s birth, she faced a dark period where she was unsure of who she was or how to cope with the overwhelming emotions she was feeling. This was exacerbated by the pressure of maintaining a public image while dealing with the intense emotional and mental toll of motherhood and personal turmoil.

Her journey is a reminder of the complexities of mental health, especially in the context of motherhood. Panettiere’s experience sheds light on the challenges that many mothers face in silence and the importance of seeking help when things feel unbearable. She also highlighted the misconception that those battling mental health issues can simply “snap out of it.” For Panettiere, seeking professional help was a crucial step in her healing journey, and although she experienced a great deal of pain in giving up custody of Kaya, she is at peace knowing that it was a decision made out of love and a desire for her daughter’s happiness.
Today, Panettiere is in a better place and continues to work on her mental health while maintaining a close relationship with her daughter. She expressed gratitude for the bond they share and is hopeful that her openness about her struggles will help reduce the stigma surrounding mental health, particularly postpartum depression.
In a world where many people are reluctant to speak out about their struggles, Panettiere’s willingness to share her story is both courageous and inspiring. By telling her truth, she hopes to break down the walls of shame and silence surrounding mental health issues and remind others that seeking help is not a sign of weakness, but a necessary step toward healing.
