In 2012, Judi was diagnosed with advanced macular degeneration. AMD is a common condition which affects the middle part of your vision. It usually first affects people in their fifties and sixties. It doesnāt cause blindness. However, it can make everyday activities, such as reading and recognising faces, much more difficult.
In a statement announcing her diagnosis back in 2012, she said: āIn response to the numerous articles in the media concerning my eye condition ā macular degeneration ā I do not wish for this to be overblown.
āThis condition is something that thousands and thousands of people all over the world are having to contend with. Itās something that I have learnt to cope with and adapt to ā and it will not lead to blindness.ā
In 2024, Judi became patron of the Yorkshire Macular Degeneration Fund, which supports research into vision loss and blindness.
āI canāt see muchā
Previously, Dame Judi confessed her vision loss was so bad she could not go outside alone, admitting in January: āI have to [go out with someone] now because I canāt see, and I walk into something.ā

āIt has become impossible,ā she said. āAnd because I have a photographic memory, I need to find a machine that not only teaches me my lines but also tells me where they appear on the page. I used to find it very easy to learn lines and remember them. I could do the whole of Twelfth Night right now,ā she added.
Dame Judi previously said she didnāt want the condition to force her into retirement. āI donāt want to retire,ā she told Louix Theroux on his BBC2 show. āIām not doing much at the moment because I canāt see. Itās bad.ā
She added to the Mail: āI canāt see on a film set any more. I canāt see to read. So I canāt see much. But you know, you just deal with it. Get on. Itās difficult for me if I have any length of a part. I havenāt yet found a way.ā
