Gemma Collins Opens Up on Family Heartbreak as Mum Joan Returns Home — “I’m Not Feeling Christmas at All”

Reality TV favourite Gemma Collins has shared an emotional update on her mum Joan’s health, revealing how ongoing worries have cast a heavy shadow over what should be the most joyful time of year.Gemma Collins in a make-up free video.

After spending five weeks in hospital battling pneumonia and a series of other health complications, Joan has now been allowed to return home — a moment of relief for the Collins family. But despite finally being reunited, Gemma admits the festive season has lost its sparkle.

Speaking to The Mirror before her mum’s discharge, Gemma was candid about how difficult it has been to even think about Christmas while Joan remained in hospital.

“I’m not feeling Christmas this year. I don’t feel that there’s any magic in the air,” she said.
“My mum’s in hospital at the moment. Until she’s home, I can’t really think about it. I’m not feeling Christmas one bit.”

Social Media Pressure Only Made It HarderGemma Collins hugging her mother, who is in bed.

As the weeks passed, Gemma also found herself struggling with the constant flood of extravagant festive displays online — something she says only heightened her emotional exhaustion.

“Thankfully I feel that this year it’s become very grotesque — so much over-the-topness on Instagram,” she explained.
“People are losing the meaning of Christmas. It’s about who you’re spending time with and who’s around your table, not the presents.”

Calling for a return to simpler values, Gemma added that the season should be about connection, not competition.

“Everyone needs to calm down and remember what Christmas is actually about.”

Family Comes First After a Turbulent Year

Family has remained Gemma’s priority through an especially testing period. She is currently engaged to Rami Hawash and helps care for his young son — a role she’s embraced openly, while also being honest about her own long and painful struggles to have a child.Gemma Collins and her mum Joan on the 'Loose Women' TV show.

Throughout Joan’s hospital stay, Gemma and Rami made regular visits with his son, determined to keep family bonds strong during an uncertain time.

Joan was rushed to hospital six weeks ago as her condition suddenly deteriorated — a moment Gemma later described as “the toughest week of my life.” Now aged 70, Joan’s recovery from pneumonia has been described by her daughter as nothing short of “an absolute miracle.”

A Long History of Health Battles

Sadly, this is not Joan’s first health scare. In May 2024, Gemma revealed her mum had been placed in intensive care following a breast cancer diagnosis, after a cancerous lump was found between her breast and armpit. At one point, Joan was rushed to hospital after she stopped breathing.

Just weeks later, Gemma spoke openly about being told her mum might die — and would not be resuscitated if she suffered cardiac arrest.

“I’ve had a lot of stress the last couple of weeks,” Gemma previously said.
“My mum was suddenly taken into hospital and I was told she could die.
They would not resuscitate her if she went into cardiac arrest.”

A Familiar Face to TOWIE Fans

Joan herself became a familiar face to viewers when she appeared on The Only Way Is Essex during its fifth series in 2012, often sharing warm and humorous moments alongside her daughter.Gemma Collins looking at the camera while lying in bed, appearing unwell.

Now, as Christmas approaches, Gemma is focusing less on festivities and more on gratitude — thankful to have her mum home, even as the family continues to heal from months of fear and uncertainty.

For Gemma Collins, this Christmas isn’t about sparkle or spectacle — it’s about survival, family, and holding close what truly matters.
