A Kentucky family’s emotional hospital experience is drawing renewed attention after claims that a man who had been declared brain dead later showed signs of consciousness before an organ donation procedure.
Anthony Thomas “TJ” Hoover was taken to Baptist Health Richmond Hospital in Richmond, Kentucky, in October 2021 after suffering cardiac arrest linked to a drug overdose. According to his sister, Donna Rhorer, the family was later told that Hoover showed no reflexes and no signs of brain activity.
Faced with devastating information, the family agreed to withdraw life support. They were also told that Hoover was a registered organ donor.
Donna later recalled seeing her brother’s eyes open and appear to follow family members in the room. She said the family was told these movements were reflexes, so they trusted the medical explanation at the time.
The situation became even more distressing when, according to Donna, a doctor came out during the planned organ donation process and told the family that Hoover was “not ready” because he had awakened.
Donna has since said she later learned further details from a former organ donation employee, including claims that Hoover showed visible signs of distress during the process. These claims have raised wider concerns and are reportedly being reviewed by relevant authorities.
Baptist Health has said patient safety is its highest priority and that it works with patients and families to follow organ donation wishes.
For the past three years, Donna has continued caring for her brother. While many questions remain, the story has become a powerful reminder of how important communication, caution and compassion are during the most difficult medical moments.
